Sk Sahedul of Bhagabanpur, East Midnapore district, West Bengal was his way to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata for a critical eye surgery of his 2 years old daughter on Saturday 2025-09-13. The surgery was scheduled for 2 pm.
Around noon his car was stopped by policemen of Howrah District Police on NH117 (Kona Expressway) at Santragachi. The hospital in Kolkata was still about 12 kms away.
All documents pertaining to his car were in order, except the Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate. Sk Sahedul admitted his fault and requested the officer to issue him a challan, promising to pay off the fine online.
The police realized that Sk Sahedul was a soft target. He requested the officers to let him go with the challan and the other documents which they had snatched away from him. His wife and himself tried their level best to explain the exigency.
The police officials were in no mood to listen to the family because their priority was to illegally extort a sum of ₹2000 from the hapless family.
The policemen kept harassing them for over 2 hours. By the time they reached hospital in Kolkata, it was well past the scheduled time of 2 pm.
They had to return to Bhagabanpur without the child's eye surgery.
This being West Bengal, it's doubtful if at all the erring policemen will get exemplary punishment or any punishment at all!
