Pune RTO expected to introduce three-letter vehicle registration format

Pune Regional Transport Office is expected to introduce a three-letter vehicle registration format as the existing MH-12 two-letter series is close to exhaustion. Officials said the city has already reached the ‘ZG’ sequence, and with only a few combinations left before ‘ZZ’, the new system may be rolled out in the next three to four months.

Once implemented, newly registered vehicles will carry number plates with three English letters such as ‘MH-12 AAA 0001’. The change comes as Pune’s total registered vehicles have crossed 43 lakh, reflecting rapid urban growth and rising vehicle purchases. This format is already in use in major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad and Chennai.
