Must See, Must Visit heritage places in Kolkata
Lascar Memorial
‘Lascar’ is a Persian word, which refers to the seamen of the Indian Ocean. The Lascar Memorial, inaugurated on 6th February 1924 by the then Governor of Bengal, Lord Lytton, was built in the memory of 896 Lascars who laid down their lives during the world war one fighting for the British Navy.
The Memorial, designed by William Ingram Keir in Indo-Mughal style, is a tall white tower located at the southern end of the Maidan on Napier Road in the Hasting area. The memorial is close to the historic Prinsep Ghat and can be spotted from the second Hooghly Bridge.
Toong On Church and Nanking Restaurant
Now overshadowed by towering structures, the two storied Toong On Church is a magnificent colonial architecture with red brick exteriors. The Chinese church, dedicated to the Chinese War God Kwang Ti, is located at Chatawala Galli, also known as Tiretta Bazar Street.
The heritage building, later in 1924, housed the famed Nanking Restaurant on its ground floor. Nanking Restaurant has a special place in Kolkata’s history as it has been a hub of various cultural activities since the city’s early days. Notably, it is also the first Chinese Restaurant in Kolkata as well as in India.
Calcutta Police Museum
The Calcutta Police Museum, situated at 123 Acharya Prafulla Chandra Road, was formerly the family residence of Raja Rammohan Roy. The residence was later converted into Sookeas Street Police Station during the British era.
The police museum, established in 1996 by the state government, houses a fascinating collection of guns, bullets, artefacts, and history. The door and wheel of Charles Tegart’s car, which was bombed by the revolutionaries, is also exhibited in the museum.
Robertson’s Monument, North Park Street Cemetery
Robertson’s Monument is the only surviving tomb of the demolished North Park Street Cemetery. The historic Cemetery was a family burial ground of the well-known Robertson Family whose male members served the British police for three generations.
The North Park Street Cemetery, built in 1797, contained the grave of Lieutenant Colonel James Achilles Kirkpatrick, made immortal by author William Dalrymple in his best-selling novel, White Mughals.
Belgachia Rajbari
The Belgachia Rajbari is situated inside the Belgachia Milk Colony in North Kolkata. The Palace, during the 18th century, was a popular outhouse for the rich and famous of Calcutta. The venue was frequented by Prince Dwarakanath Tagore and other notable names like the Dutch Prince of Orange Henry and the King Edward VII.
The Belgachia Rajbari also housed a theatre hall, where some of the famous Bengali plays have been staged. The much-acclaimed play,Ratnabali, was first staged in this Rajbari in the presence of literary luminaries like Michael Madhusudan Dutt.
Shree Digambar Jain Pareswanath Temple
Located next to the Belgachia Bridge, is the spectacular Shree Digambar Jain Pareswanath Temple, a holy place of worship for the Digambara Jain community in Kolkata.
The temple, built in 1914, is dedicated to the 23rd Tirthankara Pareswanath. The interior of the temple is decorated with magnificent structures, fountains, flower beds, and landscaped rock gardens.
Kolkata Dock System’s 118-year old Swing Bridge
The 118-year old Swing Bridge was built by London-based West Wood Baillie & Co in 1890 after the then Secretary of State approved the Kidderpore site for new docks. The Swing Bridge, an engineering marvel, connects the main Kidderpore Dock No. 1 with the tidal basin. The state-of-the-art bridge moves on a central vertical pivot, swinging open on either side to allow shipping to pass.
The bridge, after remaining closed for nearly two years, is now being recommissioned by Jessop & Co. Previously, the bridge had a roadway of 23.33 ft for moving traffic, but no more. Today, vehicles are no longer allowed on the historic Kolkata Dock Swing Bridge.
St. John’s Church
Basically, a cathedral, the St. John’s Church in Kolkata’s Dalhousie Square is one of the oldest public buildings built by the East India Company after Kolkata became the capital of British India. The beautiful Church, located in the heart of Kolkata, was erected in 1787 using funds raised through a public lottery.
St. John’s Church, considered as the first Parish Church of Bengal, became the primary Cathedral of Kolkata in 1815 and it continued to remain so until the consecration of St. Paul’s Cathedral in 1874.
Marble Palace
Marble Palace is the home of the renowned Mullick family of Kolkata. The palace, built in 1840 by Zamindar Raja Rajendralal Mullick, is an architectural splendour. Situated in the northern part of the city, it still has a private zoo and a museum that houses a spectacular collection of curios and paintings including artworks of celebrated painters like Peter Paul Rubens and Sir Joshua Reynolds.
Town Hall
The majestic Town Hall, located close to the city centre, stands as a witness to several historic gatherings and debates that had a huge impact on the political and socio-economic landscape of British India. The heritage building, erected in a Palladian style, was designed by French military engineer Colonel Gastin. The Hall was made open to the public in 1814.
The Town Hall, which is currently in the midst of a restoration process, accommodates a museum known as Kolkata Panorama, and a library that houses research works and personal collections of noted historian P.T. Nair.
Kolkata has a deep repository of memories in the folds of its photogenic heritage places that have tremendous historical importance. But unfortunately, many of these sites are in a dilapidated state due to lack of maintenance, and very soon they may be reduced to nothing but ruins.
The Kolkata Municipal Corporation, along with other relevant Municipalities, have formed a Municipal Heritage Conservation Committee to identify ailing heritage buildings so that they can be recommended to the West Bengal Heritage Commission for renovation and restoration. While the state government is making attempts to restore and preserve the city’s heritage sites, more attention needs to be paid to these sites that may not be very famous but are steeped in the rich history of the city.

West Bengal government plans dedicated cycle tracks across Kolkata
West Bengal government plans dedicated cycle tracks across Kolkata to promote sustainable transport.
.
.
.
The West Bengal government is planning to turn Kolkata into a city of bicycles once again.
Prodded by the government, the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) has decided to engage a reputable consultancy firm to prepare a road map and comprehensive plan for setting up dedicated cycling zone and cycling path in the city.
The consulting agency will have to prepare a comprehensive public bicycle scheme with a detailed project report (DPR) for a pilot project. The agency will have to propose the number of cycle stations that must be set up in the core city area and also plan out the network of track, which will be mostly along the main arterial roads outside the core city area.
According to the tender documents, the selected agency will have to come up with the comprehensive plan within three months of commencing of work.
Sources from the urban development department said the government wants to promote cycling as a green mode of transport system.
The first public cycling scheme was introduced in New Town by the Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (Hidco). Though the scheme has been withdrawn temporarily, authorities are working to revive it by setting up dedicated parking lots for bicycles.
A few years back, the state had planned to develop a bus rapid transport system (BRTS) that also included a proposal for having a dedicated cycle track corridor on a large stretch of EM Bypass from near Metropolitan to Garia. The project did not materialise, but with the state government launching the green cities mission scheme that includes developing ecofriendly and sustainable measures, the need to develop dedicated cycle zones have rise again.

Swipe credit/ debit card and pay traffic fines in Kolkata from January 2020
From January 2020, swipe and pay traffic fine in Kolkata.
Don’t have enough cash to pay traffic fine on the spot? Here comes the solution. You will be able to pay traffic fines with a swipe of your credit or debit card from January 2020.
A year after Bidhannagar police introduced the new system of spot payment, Kolkata Police will provide sergeants with swipe machines for spot-fine collection. Police will, in fact, actively discourage cash transaction, advising sergeants to refer cases (where online transactions have been denied by motorists) to courts. “We had been mulling this change for some time now. We think we are finally ready for the experiment,” said DC (traffic) Santosh Pandey.
Currently, traffic fines can be paid online, using cards, offline at designated bank branches and in some cases, through payment service providers. The backlogs have been huge, forcing police and the state administration to offer waivers on fines.
There are two reasons for this new step, claimed Lalbazar. From the motorists’ point of view, this will help a driver — short on cash — to pay up without worry. Besides the SMS, there will be additional e-evidence that the fine had been settled. Two, from the point of view of cops, this will reduce corruption on the road. “A common public perception is that the sergeant does not hand over the fine collected to the treasury. This notion can be challenged under the new regime,” explained an officer.
“The spot fine using a POS machine is a part of the Integrated Traffic Management System. The machine generates receipt for the fine. This information is then fed to the central database. The offender receives intimation of challan, along with information on the fine paid, both on his cellphone and e-mail ID,” said an IPS officer.
The police said that they are yet to take a decision on those who refuse to pay online. “Depending on the response, we will develop a strategy,” said an officer from a south Kolkata traffic guard.

Majerhat Bridge on Diamond Harbour Road (NH117), Kolkata collapsed on 2018-09-04 afternoon

Ever since I shifted to Kolkata in 1980 for my higher studies in St.Xavier's College, commuting from Behala to Park Street via Majerhat Bridge has been a harrowing experience.
I have always stated that Behala's 'behal' (hopeless situation) will never end. I have always wondered why my 'dadu' (grandpa) had to construct our beautiful house in Behala.
Little did he know in the early 1960s that Jyotis and Satatas will rule this state (Behala included) to its ultimate funeral.
Ever since SHE, the proprietress of #MaMaMa party assumed power in Wasted Bengal in May 2011, situations in the milling metropolis and the rest of the state have gone from bad to terrible!
Kolkata and rest of Bengal are only like 'palash' flowers which look nice on first glance but have none of the qualities associated with beautiful flowers :(
The only industry that thrives in this state is 'organized extortion', nothing worthwhile happens :(

At the time of reporting there's no concrete report on the number of casualties or the number of people injured. Number of people must have lost their lives or have been grievously injured. The ministers, secretaries, police, party functionaries and others dare NOT comment on numbers because everything in this state happens only on the inspiration of HER HIGHNESS. She is presently in Darjeeling and has already started making horrendous remarks!

A mighty fall on 2018-04-05 has left me in immense pain. Too bad for me
At around 2.15pm on 2018-04-05 Thursday, I (Deep Banerjee, Founder - IndianRoadie) suffered a mighty fall after skidding on the tram tracks exactly in front of Crown Cinema on Rafi Ahmed Kiwai Road, Kolkata.
I am in immense pain. Feeling terribly worried about the frightful swelling above the cuts on the sheen, a little below the knee.
The attached pictures say it all.
My 27 yrs old faithful on two small wheels faced the music, too.
All this happened thanks to the privileged class of Wasted Bengal whose youngsters triple ride bikes without helmets and that too on major 'one way' main thoroughfares. They come pelting down at you in the wrong direction. The onus is on us to stay clear of them.
Not a single police officer or even a civic police is seen on these roads to book errant traffic rule breakers.
The Queen who rules West Bengal will never want those rogues on bikes (with assured vote bank demographics) to be punished for obvious reasons.

Yellow taxis in Kolkata in West Bengal, India are a receeding phenomenon as in mid-2017

Receeding phenomenon!
In another 4 - 5 years, the ubiquitous gaudy yellow Ambassador taxis could be an absolutely rare sight in #Kolkata in #WestBengal, #India.
During my growing up years it was only the Black body and Yellow top Ambassador taxis manufactured by Hindustan Motors that ruled the thoroughfares of Kolkata.
For some odd policies of the erstwhile Communist Government that ruled the state from 1977 to 2011, the colours of all taxis in Kolkata were changed to a gaudy Yellow in the early 2000s.
In May 2011 with the change of government in West Bengal, it became mandatory for all taxis to sport horizontal blue lines on both sides.
It's widely known that the lady head of the present government since 2011 has a peculiar fetish for blue and white. As in 2017, all new general taxis in Kolkata are sporting the white and blue colour.
Moreover, it's already over 2 years that the production of Ambassador cars have stopped because the company has downed shutters.

Mangled median divider iron railings are a big risk for the ride & rider in Kolkata roads
The situation worsens especially after dark when you suddenly see the those deadly obstacles in your lane.
At most times, you need to brake hard & stop dead in your track because during that very moment some vehicle could be overtaking you menacingly from your left or right.
Have you ever wondered if installing these fragile iron railings on median dividers or as footpath railings to keep jaywalkers at bay are scientifically accepted norms by city planners.
Removal of such potentially fatal obstacles on busy throughfares should be promptly undertaken by the the police.
Believe in me, within the past fortnight I, Deep Banerjee was witness to a motorcyclist toppling over while trying to avoid a collision with a median divider iron railing during daytime.
I also saw a sedan's door(s) getting badly split when the gentleman driving the car grazed past one of those precariously projecting objects after dark.
I am really paranoid about the impending risk to me & my ride.
Have you felt equally unsafe or do you have any incident to share?
