Toyota Corolla in New Zealand has clocked 20 lakh kms and still going strong

A man in New Zealand has created a record of sorts. The car he bought in 1993 - a Toyota Corolla - has clocked more than two million (20 lakh) kilometres. And surprisingly, the car is still running efficiently. According to New Zealand Herald, 72-year-old Graeme Hebley noticed the milestone mark in March and believes it will run "forever". Mr Hebley has been working as a newspaper delivery contractor since the 1960s, the Herald report further said. He purchased the car in the year 2000 when it had only 80,000 kilometres on the odometre.

Mr Hebley drives from Wellington to New Plymouth and back six days a week. This means the car runs 5,000 kilometres every week, which requires him to get it serviced every fortnight.

The Corolla, which still has the original engine and transmission, is serviced at Guthrie's Auto Care in Whanganui every two weeks for the last 22 years, according to New Zealand Herald.

"I broke down one morning in one of my vans. I rang John Sherman from Guthrie's and he came out and helped me. I have been getting all of my servicing done here since," Mr Hebley was quoted as saying by the Herald.

"It was used to deliver chippies in Tokyo before I got it," he further said.

The only major changes in the car's two-decade-long journey are cambelt - which has been replaced 20 times - and wheel bearings. Besides these parts, the car is original, the outlet further said.

Exit NH19 at Etawah and drive on Lucknow-Agra Expressway

Motorists driving from Kolkata/ Varanasi/ Kanpur to Agra/ Delhi  can leave NH19 at Etawah and start driving on Lucknow-Agra Expressway upto Agra And seamlessly connect to Yamuna Expressway to avoid the traditionally congested towns between Etawah and Agra.

Motorists from Kolkata, Durgapur, Asansol, Dhanbad should note that unless one has any specific reason to visit Lucknow, it's not very feasible to exit NH19 at Aurangabad or Sasaram or Varanasi or Allahabad bypass to drive all the way to Lucknow and continue the drive upto Agra or Delhi.
The roads connecting NH19 to Purvanchal Expressway or Lucknow-Agra Expressway are slow, passes through small towns/ villages and mostly double lane without median divider.

Indian Roadie is Travel and Automobiles Plus Plus

The contents in Indian Roadie and Associated Forums Of Indian Roadie are mostly NOT geography specific or vehicle specific. The contents are primarily for audience who are Indians in mind and spirit, who might be owning any make/ age of automobile(s).

The initiatives by me (Deep Banerjee, Founder - Indian Roadie and associated forums) are best described as Indian Roadie Is Travel Plus Plus, Indian Roadie Is Automobiles Plus Plus, Indian Roadie Is For Vehicle Ownership Delight, Indian Roadie Help Brands Grow, Indian Roadie Helps Top Of The Mind Brand Recall for all product/ service categories.
There's a bit of Indian Roadie In Everyday Life.

Although the name of the forum/ group (where you are reading this post at this very moment) possibly has the name of a state as the prefix (viz. #KarnatakaRoadie, #TelanganaRoadie, #MaharashtraRoadie, #GujaratRoadie, #DelhiNcrRoadie, #RajasthanRoadie, #NorthEastRoadie, #BengalRoadie, etc), the contents are mostly national/ universal in nature. The target audience in the State Roadie forums need not be a Punjabi or a Marathi or a Malayali or a Odiya or a Bengali. Anyone who is reasonably conversant with a State can be a member of the respective State Roadie forum.

You might be owning a Hyundai, Maruti, Tata, Mahindra, VW, Skoda, Jeep, Ford or some other brand but need assistance/ information/ clarification on local mechanics, tyres, batteries, lubricants, hotels, hospitals, pharmacies, eateries, fuel stations, route suggestion, etc, etc, etc. Although you might be reading this post (at this very moment) in #MarutiOwnersAndBrandAdmirers, #HyundaiOwnersAndBrandAdmirers, #VolkswagenOwnersAndBrandAdmirers, #TataOwnersAndBrandAdmirers, #MahindraOwnersAndBrandAdmirers, #KiaOwnersAndBrandAdmirers, etc, etc, etc, majority of contents are universal/ national in nature. The contents are NOT vehicle specific or geography specific at most times.

I don't think that there are hotels in India which welcome only Renault owners, local mechanics who repair only Tata  cars, doctors who treat Nissan owners only, pharmacies wich sell sanitary napkins to Ford owners only, restaurants which serve Kia owners only, malls which cater to Maruti owners only!

You might be in KA, TS, PB, DL, MH, GJ, WB, JH, AR, AS, ML (or whichever state) right now, own a Honda, Maruti, Mahindra, Kia, MG, etc but might require assistance/ information not only pertaining to your present state or vehicle but also in any adjoining or a far off state in India. Or you might also have technical issues pertaining to your brand of car which are also common with every other brand of cars.

If you still can't find what you are looking for, find your answer in Indian Roadie Facebook Group and Page, Blogspot, X (erstwhile, Twitter), LinkedIn, etc. You only need to have the ability to do some smart search. My initiatives are very well indexed.

Road trip from Bangalore to Ladakh and back by Akash Mohan in September 2023

Sharing the experience of my September 2023 drive from Bangalore to Ladakh and back (via Delhi, Kashmir, Manali, Chandigarh) in a Mahindra Thar (Diesel).

Day 1 Bangalore to Nagpur - 17 Hours
Day 2 Nagpur to Agra - 16 Hours
Day 3 Agra to Delhi - 2.5 Hours

First day was all in all pretty good. Wide empty roads and we cruised along fairly easily. Special mention to the hyderabad ORR. Probably the best stretch of road on the trip for me.

Second day was pretty terrible. I expected the biggest problem to be cattle so was prepared for that but I didn't expect the roads to be so bad, relatively speaking. Very bumpy ride, potholes big and small and varying levels of frequently. Not really sure why it's so bad. Either way this was a real energy snapper and we barely limped into Agra without bumping into any cattle. Better roads and we'd have made it all the way to Delhi.

There's a real shortage of good eateries on the way. Carry plenty of foodstuff.

Delhi to Ladakh:
Stopped at Patnitop and went from Patnitop to Sonamarg directly. There's construction work ongoing in places but if you leave early there should be no issues. Beyond Qazigund it was smooth sailing all the way till Sonamarg.

Hello guys - I recently completed my Bangalore to Ladakh road trip. Reached Delhi today and will be traveling back to Bangalore over the next 3 days. Thought I'd note down a few points that might help others from a road point of view.

1. Sonamarg to Leh stretch had excellent roads all through barring small stretches on the Zoji La descent. The Kargil to Namik La climb stretch is just stunning.

2. The old route from Nubra to Pangong is washed out. The new route is via Rongdo village. When coming from Diskit side take a left immediately after the IOC petrol pump, go for another 1-2 kms where you will see a board directing you to take right towards pangong. The new Road is pretty much 95% offroading until Tangste. There is basically no roads. You are driving on gravel, rocks or river beds. The road is good from Tangste onwards.

3. For people exiting chushul, I'd suggest taking the Kaksang La route even if it's longer (while going to Hanle at least). It's very steep but fulled tarred throughout. Absolutely amazing drive with the added bonus of 2 stunning lakes on the way.

4. While going to Tso Moriri, it's completely offroad from Sumdo onwards.

5. While I myself got lucky with my timing, while traveling from Kullu to Mandi theres a place where vehicles are let through one way only. This may include waiting times of more than an hour depending on your timing.

6. I drove the Thar diesel. Happy to report i had no DPF issues that's been an issue with BS6 cars. As a precaution I tried wherever possible to keep above 1.5k RPM without being reckless.

Pune to Goa (North) via Karad, Malkapur - Indian Roadie Preferred Route, Motoring Route, Driving Route for road trip

Indian Roadie Preferred Route, Motoring Route, Driving Route for road trip from

Pune to Goa North via Karad, Malkapur
(Pune_GoaNorth) in mid September 2023 was excellent barring a short stretch after the ghats.

Pune - Satara - Karad - Exit NH48 about 5 kms ahead of Karad by taking right turn under flyover to Paachwad - Kokrud - Malkapur.

Thereafter, there are 2  options:

Option A: Take right to Aamba - Aamba Ghat (quite picturesque and many times foggy) - Saakharpa - Shiposhi - Korle - Bhambed - Waatul where it connects to old Goa Road before Rajapur. From here it's new road all the way to Patradevi, North Goa. Keep looking for Mapusa road-sign to take the right service road.
Malkapur to Aamba road is slightly bad in patches and also slightly patchy from Aamba Ghaat upto Khind. From Saakharpa onwards, it's smooth road. Avoid temptation to race.

Option B: Take left at Malkapur to Anuskura Ghaat - down to ahead of Rajapur on way to Goa. The route is picturesque, too.

Food options:
There are several roadside food outlets at Satara, Karad, Aamba, Bhambed, Rajapur, Kudal, Kankavli.
For breakfast there is Vittal Kamat restaurant and few more.
For lunch one can stop at Pavhaner Restaurant, Kankavli. It had good local menu. Prawns curry is delicious.

Expected timings:
Start drive from Pune at 5 am.
Reach Goa by 3.30 pm.

Delhi to Kolkata - Indian Roadie Preferred Itinerary, Route in September - November 2023

I (Deep Banerjee, Founder - Indian Roadie and associated forums) am getting scores of messages almost everyday from people planning to drive from Delhi/ Gurgaon/ Noida/ Ghaziabad to Kolkata during or before the Durga Puja in October 2023.

My suggestion for Delhi to Kolkata (Delhi_Kolkata) route and itinerary (for September, October, November 2023) to all such people:

Day 1 Noida (5 am) - Agra - Agra Lucknow Expressway but exit at Etawah to almost immediately touch NH19 - Kanpur (long flyover crisscrosses the city) - Allahabad bypass - Varanasi.
Avoid driving upto Lucknow or even Buxar unless you want to sample the delicacies of Lucknow. The drive from Lucknow to Varanasi or Buxar to Sasaram or Aurangabad is not very pleasant.

Day 2: Varanasi (Start around 11 am after Kashi Vishwanath Mandir darshan and wonderful breakfast) - Sasaram - Aurangabad - Barhi - Topchanchi (halt for the night).

Day 3: Start from Topchanchi by 8 am after breakfast - Gobindpur - Kumardhubi - exit NH19 for a loop drive of 8 kms and leisurely drive over Maithon Dam - stop for a while at Kalyaneshwari Mandir and the lip smacking 'peda' - touch NH19 once again immediately after the Barakar River Bridge - Asansol bypass - Durgapur - Panagarh bypass - Bardhaman bypass - stop for 'lyangcha', samosas, chai at Shaktigarh - Palsit toll plaza - while crossing Singur look right to view the skeletal remains of the Tata Motors factory - Dankuni toll plaza - Kolkata (3 pm tentatively).

Varanasi to Kolkata (680 kms) can be done in a day. However, with the massive road widening work which is on between Panagagarh and Dankuni, it's best to split the drive to avoid getting frustrated.

Note: There are time tested and favourably reviewed Indian Roadie Preferred Hotel and Indian Roadie Preferred Cafe brands all over India. The tariffs will have to be negotiated by you. I am not in the business of selling hotel rooms or breakfast/ lunch/ dinner. However, for names of such facilities on a route you must Order Indian Roadie Stickers and Fix Indian Roadie Stickers on your car. Some businesses might offer extra benefits to cars displaying the ubiquitous stickers outside and inside.

Bus ride from ID Hospital to Akashvani Bhawan, Kolkata on 2023-09-18

At 5.25 pm on Monday 2023-09-18 completed a 9 kms ride upto All India Radio office in a local blue and yellow private bus in Kolkata.
Paid a meagre ₹15 for the 9 kms ride.
It was just an effort to keep myself grounded to the roots.
