For those wanting to break the journey, Sagara is the best place to stop for the night. 

There is no need to go via Shivamoga and one can stay in Sagara and go via an excellent route, viz. Davanagere - Hirekerur - Shiralakoppa. Stay in Sagara. On the way one can visit Gudavi bird sanctuary and Ikkeri temple. With an early morning start at 5 am, Kundapura can be reached by 3 pm.
