Bangalore to Aurangabad via Hospet, Solapur, Beed road trip in January 2021 by Parag Sachania

Roadtrip report: Bangalore to Aurangabad

Route Taken: Bangalore - Chitradurga - Hospet - Vijayapura - Sholapur - Osmanabad - Beed - Aurangabad

Distance: 940 Kms.

Start time: 0357 (Yelahanka, Bangalore)

End time: 1604 (Station Road, Yelahanka)

Breaks: Breakfast (15m), Lunch (15m), Refueling (5m), Bio Break (5m)

Refueling: End of Beed bypass (HPCL)

Breakfast break : Nanadagokula Restaurant, near Kudilgi (Earlier was known as Sangam International)

Road Condition:

Bangalore - Chitradurga: Nothing specific, all good

Chitradurga - Hospet: Wonderful road, all good

Hospet - Vijayapura: Although 4 lane till Vijayapura, the surface is a mix of good and bad. The highlight of course are the innumerable speedbreakers at almost every break in the median, few with signage and few others without. A superb example of why speedbreakers are called “SPEED BREAKERS”

Vijayapura - Sholapur: 4 Lane expansion work is in Progress with multiple diversions. Avoid this under dark as diversions are badly marked often you will witness 2 way traffic on both sides of the corridor only because few hav  either missed a diversion while few others know that this is a regular affair

Sholapur Bypass: I had to cross this messy city to reach the other side. Took around 45 minutes including some really narrow and busy lanes on a Sunday afternoon.

Sholapur – Tuljapur – Osmanabad – Beed Aurangabad: EXCELLENT! Perhaps the best stretch to drive in my own recent part. Well marked, well engineering, well banked, extremely consistent road surface including levelled bridges and culverts. A big thumbs up to the consortium that built this. Ashok Kheny from NICE can take some tutorials to know how roads are built and can still be safe.

MG Hector crash in Goa on 2021-02-21

There were 3 vehicles involved in a scary crash on Marcel-Banastari Road in Goa at around 9.00 pm on Sunday, 2021-02-21.

A 2 wheeler, a Maruti Swift and a MG Hector which suffered the maximum damage were involved in the crash.
The mishap supposedly happened just about 10 mins after the same MG had overtaken a roadie, Shantaram Prabhu Chimulkar in a tearing hurry by continuously flashing the headlights on the typically narrow and winding roads that Goa is famous for.

Shantaram was also in a hurry and therefore didn't stop to enquire about the details.

Although the exact reason for the crash couldn't be ascertained, Shantaram predicted that the 2 wheeler possibly grazed the right side of the Swift while overtaking, lost balance and hit the oncoming MG Hector.
The Swift had possibly not collided with the MG at all.

Details of casualties or injuries could not be ascertained.

On NH65, a high speed corridor of 295 kms between Vijayawada and Hyderabad on Sunday, 2021-02-21.
From the photos, it's obvious that the Wagon R was not being driven at high speed when the mishap occured.
No wonders that everyone in the car are totally safe.
It's not the much hobnobbed build of car that kills. It's stupidity of a driver that kills.
No further details of the cause of the mishap is known.

Road trip to Raghurajpur heritage crafts village, 10 kms from Puri by Aman Jaiswal

Aman Jaiswal rode to Raghurajpur, Puri, Odisha on 2021-01-30.

Raghurajpur is a heritage crafts village in Odisha state. 10 kms from Puri and 55 kilometers from the state capital Bhubaneshwar.

If you are visiting Puri, which is a very popular tourist destination. you must spend some time here in this village to see how they work and purchase something to support the local art.

There are about a 100 houses in the village and almost everyone is an artisan. They are Pattachitra painters, an art form which dates back to 5 BC. They also make traditional masks, stone idols, paper mache, sculptures, wooden toys.

Some of these artists have also won National Awards for their exceptional work.

Amid scenic surroundings of coconut, palm and jackfruit groves, this village is an ideal getaway from Puri or Bhubaneshwar.

Raghurajpur is also reknowned for being the birthplace of Kelucharan Mohapatra, the renowned exponent of the Odissi dance form.

It is sad that at one point of time, these artisans were forced to get in to agriculture as they could not survive by selling their artworks.

In 1998, the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) did a two year research and this village was chosen for being developed as the first heritage village to be developed as a crafts village. They trained the villagers on relearn traditional techniques and impliment them in their artworks. They learnt how to prepare plaster made of lime, sand, jute, molasses, lentils, curd, casein and local herbs such as trifala and bel.

There are other neighbouring villages like Dandasahi, Nayakapatna and Khasposak which are also involved in these work.

The pattachitra paintings are made over a piece of cloth known as Patta or a dried palm leaf, which is first painted with a mixture of chalk and gum. Over the prepared surface, colorful and intricate pictures of various Gods, Goddesses, and mythological scenes with ornamentation of flowers, trees and animals are then painted.

The paintings on Tussar saris, especially the Sambalpuri Saree depicting Mathura Vijay, Raslila and Ayodhya Vijay owe their origin to ‘Raghurajpur Pattachitra paintings.

NHAI contractor created world record by laying maximum concrete in 24 hours on 1st February 2021

NHAI contractor created world record by laying maximum concrete in 24 hours on 1st February 2021.
NHAI contractor, Patel Infrastructure Limited has created a world record by laying the highest quantity of concrete on a four-lane highway in 24 hours, according to a release by the government.

The record was set for laying of Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC) for a four-lane highway of 2,580 meters length within 24 hours. Starting at 8 am on 1 February, 2021, they finished the job, totalling 2,580 meters X 4 lanes i.e. approximately 10.32 lane kilometres by 8 am next morning. With a width of 18.75 meters, as much an area as 48,711 square meters of concrete was laid for the expressway in 24 hours. The highest quantity of concrete laid in 24 hours - 14,613 cubic meter was achieved.

The new feat, according to the release by Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MORTH), has been recognized by both the India Book of Records, and the Golden Book of World Records.

The record is part of the greenfield Delhi - Vadodara - Mumbai 8-lane Expressway project, and was carried out by the world’s largest fully automatic ultra-modern concrete paver machine.

MORTH claims to have constructed 8,169 km of National Highways (NHs) from April 2020 to 15 January 2021 in the current financial year 2020-21, i.e. with a speed of about 28.16 km per day.

During the same period in the last fiscal, 7,573 km roads were constructed, with a speed of 26.11 km per day.The Ministry is hopeful that with such pace it should be able to cross construction target of 11,000 km by 31 March 2021.

Goa to Mysore on February 2021 by Barry Smith

Drive report Panjim (Goa) to Mysuru in early February 2021 by Barry Smith in the first person:

Left Panjim at 12.00 noon and drove via Old Goa, Ponda to reach Molem. Decent roads, not much traffic. Molem to Hubli roads are decent expect for 10 kms from border inside Karnataka very bad roads. From Ramnagar to Dharwad  toll road and.  not much traffic. Reached Dharwad by 4.30 pm..Dharwad to Davengere good road except a few diversions  for road work. Reached Davengere by 7.30. Took a 2 hour break  . Davengere to Chitradurga was horrifying because every few kms  you have diversions. From Chitradurga to Tumkur it's a beautiful 4 lane way . I was able to cover in 2 hours. Took the deviation from Tumkur to reach maddur via kunigal. It's a state highway but a very smooth road with one toll. From maddur to mysuru speed slows you down because of road widening. Reached Mysuru by 3.00 am. Overall I prefer this route to drive from Goa to Mysuru.

Mumbai to North Goa in Triumph SpeedTwin by Roopesh Shah in February 2021

Roopesh Shah did Powai, Mumbai to Morjim, Goa on his Triumph SpeedTwin on Friday, 5th February 2021. Triumph SpeedTwin is a small, light and fast machine but comes with slightly hard suspension and doesn't like to be off tarmac.
Route was superb - almost 99% smooth tarmac with no issues at all. That 1% is what nature does to roads in any case.
Read on in the 1st person  ....
Started packing and just before 6am with enough fuel to take me over a 100 kms. Getting out of Mumbai was easy with little to no traffic anywhere. I did manage to find a huge jam on the common section of the expressway before Lonavla. Filtered through without any issue. Noticed it just cops pulling over random trucks that was causing the jam. I was tempted to stop for chai at Lonavla but pushed ahead. Made the first fuel-only stop at Kamshet. Maybe 10 mins tops to fuel-up and pay. This was at about 7.30 am or so.
Next run what I thought will be filled with traffic turned out to be a joy to get though was from Kamshet through Pune and reaching McDonald's at Khed-Shivapur Toll. Reached there before 8.30am. Was famished and got a burger + coffee. My next stop was directly a fuel-stop just before Kolhapur. Again 10 mins bio break and fuel up. Smooth roads right through.
Next up was directly at Goa Ves, Tavandi Ghat to take the right into Amboli ghat. Met a few other bikers and rode along for a bit. I think they wanted to make stops for pix and fly-bys so didn't linger on. Next stop was one quick ThumsUp at Banda at 1.40 pm. I reached Morjim before 2.30 pm.
Troubled sections could be down to the Ajara - Sawantwadi section where the winding narrow highway is not new. Rest was all smooth as it could be.
