Experimenting with Indian Roadie Hacks to partially escape rats/ rat/ rodents menace

A couple of HIT Rat Kill cakes were placed on the engine bay of my VW Vento TDi at 4.30 pm on 2021-11-23.
On 2021-11-24 when I opened the bonnet I found that one big fat who's the neta of the menacing creatures have eaten away all the cakes. The accompanying video/ photo was recorded/ clicked on 2021-11-24 at 2.30 pm.
I spotted it running away but it seems the poisonous cakes are working. It was somewhat drowsy. I am hell bent on sending it to 'jannat'!
I have placed a couple of 'ready to eat and die' cakes for them to feast on once again.
Let your prayers for their early demise be there with me.

Indian Roadie Hacks to partially escape rats/ rat/ rodents menace using HIT Rat Kill cakes

Laid out a sumptuous 'ready to eat and die' meal for the heinous rats at 4.30 pm on 2021-11-23.
The engine bay of my VW Vento TDi is their dining table.
Those enemies of all sizes (at times big enough to scare away big fat cats) cause unprecedented damage to cars.
I would be delighted to write the obituary of at least one of them ASAP to stop their menace for the next few weeks.
Let your prayers be there with me for their early painful demise.
Please don't expect me to do Gandhigiri with rats.

How long can one drive in a day, is a regular FAQ

A frequently asked query by car owners,
"I am planning to take my 2 months (or, 2/ 3/ 4 yrs) old XYZ (brand of car) for a 800 kms drive for the first time ever in my life.
My question is for how many kms I can keep driving in a day?"

The answer is:
- Just keep driving for any distance depending on your tenacity.
- Avoid revving your car to more than 2200 RPM (ideally not more than 2000 RPM) for decent fuel economy and safety.
- Avoid frequent acceleration or braking.
- The moment you feel a bit sleepy, park safely and away from the highway at a filling station or dhaba and take a powernap for 20 mins. You will wake up totally rejuvenated.
- In any case you will have to stop for breaks of 5 - 15 minutes each whenever call of nature demands or when you need to refill or meals or when you feel the desire for chai or a selfie.
- In a 800 - 900 kms drive of 13 - 15 hrs on decent highways, there will invariably be a minimum of 5 - 6 shorts breaks of 5 - 15 minutes each.
- Open the bonnet atleast thrice for the duration of the stop for faster cooling and visual checking to see if anything is amiss.
- Ensure that you know how to open the bonnet of the car and change punctured wheels, if needed.
- Strictly No Planned Night Driving.

That's more than enough for the safety of your dear ones, yourself and your car.

Bulge on the outer wall of a tyre is dangerous

"I see a bulge on the outer wall of the tyre. Have run my new car on this tyre for 1800 kms.
Is this a serious issue?
Should the tyre be replaced?
Can it be repaired?"

The above is a prototype of frequently asked questions in various social media forums.

Answer: Extremely serious issue.
Irrespective of whether the tyre has run for 800 kms or 2800 kms or 28000 kms, replace the tyre ASAP if you truly believe that your life and those of your dear ones are important. Tyres with bulges on the side walls can't and shouldn't be repaired.

Throttle Body - Indian Roadie Knowledge Hub - Auto Parts

What is the throttle body and how does it work?
The throttle body is an air metering device mounted between the air filter and snorkel, and the intake plenum. Within the throttle body is a movable throttle plate whose position controls the amount of air that enters the engine to determine engine speed. Throttle body designs vary. Some incorporate an idle air control valve, throttle position sensor, and other electronic throttle controls. The throttle plate in the throttle body can be controlled directly by an accelerator pedal cable or fully electronically in the newest drive-by-wire systems.
When to consider replacing the throttle body?
* Check engine light and/or reduced power warning light is on.
Most modern throttle bodies have electrical components, such as a throttle position sensor. These components are monitored by the powertrain control module (PCM). If the check engine light or reduced power warning light comes on, a mechanic will determine if any of the stored trouble codes implicate a throttle body malfunction.

* Wrong idle speed.
Carbon deposits in the throttle body, particularly around the movable throttle plate or in the idle air control valve, can cause the engine idle speed to be too low or too high.

* Poor transmission shifting.
In some applications, transmission shift timing relies on signal outputs from the throttle body. If the throttle position sensor is defective, that might adversely affect shift timing and feel.
How do mechanics replace the throttle body?
The engine cover is removed, if necessary.
The flexible rubber snorkel from the air filter housing to the throttle body is disconnected. Typically, the connection is made with a large stainless steel hose clamp.
The electrical connections to the throttle body are removed.
If the throttle body is not a drive-by-wire system, the accelerator cable and cruise control cable are disconnected and set aside.
The bolts retaining the throttle body to the plenum, the gasket, and the throttle body are removed. If the throttle body is being cleaned and tested for re-use, approved chemicals are used in the cleaning process.
The new or serviced throttle body is re-attached to the plenum and the bolts torqued to factory specifications.
All cables and electrical connections are restored. The intake air snorkel is reconnected.
If applicable, the electronic throttle installation and idle re-learn procedures are performed using an appropriate scan tool.
Finally, the engine is started, brought to normal operating temperature, and idle speed is checked. The car is road tested to ensure normal operation and no illumination of warning or service lights.
Is it safe to drive with a throttle body problem?
Yes. But, the vehicle may be limited in power or put into what is referred to as limp mode, in order to get the vehicle to a repair facility. If the check engine light is on, or the electronic throttle control warning light is on, but there is no noticeable difference in engine performance, the car can be safely driven. However, it is best to have it diagnosed and repaired at your earliest convenience to avoid unexpected breakdown or possible damage to the catalytic converter.
When replacing the throttle body keep in mind:
* Many modern throttle bodies have spring loaded sensors and plastic gears that are not intended to be manipulated directly during any diagnostics or inspections. These components are controlled electronically or generate signals. It is best to let a mechanic use approved tests to diagnose the problem.

* Wiring faults, bad grounds, or bad terminal connections can make it appear as though an electronically controlled throttle has failed. A mechanic will always rule out all other causes before replacing the throttle body.

* When cleaning the throttle body, special care should be taken to use only special spray cleaners designed to not damage electrical components or sensors.

Weird MIL popped up in my VW Vento on 2021-11-13

Weird Malfunction Indicator Lamps (MIL) suddenly started glowing in my VW Vento while I was driving from Salt Lake Sector 5 to my home in Beliaghata, Kolkata at 1.30 PM on Saturday 2021-11-13.
The malfunction lights appeared immediately after taking a U-Turn near Nicco Park.
It was only the ABS lights which had been glowing since the past 2+ years. Ever since the four fuel injectors were serviced on 2021-10-29, the car was running very smoothly without any abnormalities whatsoever.
The new additional lights which popped up on 2021-11-13 were those of the Airbag, Handbrake, Check Engine, Glow Plug, and Steering. Some abnormalities were also felt while pressing the brake. Although the Glow Plug light lit up for a short while, there was no drop in engine power/ RPM.
Before reaching home I had switched off the car at least four times for PUC testing, tyre pressure checking, refuelling, etc.
However, after reaching home at 3.00 pm and switching off the engine, the car could be started for barely about 3 seconds every time. About 5 - 6 attempts were made to start the car and keep it running without any success. The power window which was rolled down after reaching home, refused to roll up initially but started working once the car was manually pushed into the garage.
The odometer reading before locking up the car at 3.45 pm on 2021-11-13 was 44495.

Road trip to Ranchi, Hundru and Johna Waterfalls, Jharkhand by Asit Madeka in mid November 2021

Asit Madeka, an Indian Roadie who is a resident of Sitarampur (near Asansol) drove his Hyundai i10 Grand to Ranchi and onwards to Johna and Hundru Waterfalls on a rain soaked weekend in mid November 2021.

Day 1 (12th November, 2021):
Asansol to Ranchi (Asansol_Ranchi)

Route (onwards journey): Asansol - Sitarampur - Barakar River bridge/ Kalyaneswari - Kumardhubi bypass - Nirsa - Gobindpur (NH19, ROL: To Dhanbad) - Rajgunj (Exit NH19, Turn left) - Katras - Sonardih - Mahuda More - Damodar River bridge - Damodar toll plaza - Bokaro Steel City (on right)/ Chas - Petarbar - Gola - Oarmanjhi (Meets Ranchi Patna National Highway, ROR: Ramgarh Cantonment, ROL: Ranchi) - Medanta Hospital Ranchi - BIT Mesra - Ranchi.

Road condition (onwards journey): Fairly good. Few traffic bottle necks at Govindpur, Rajgunj and Petarbar. The road from Gola to Oarmanjhi is fair but with a few very large and deep potholes. Driving was a bit slow on this stretch.

Day 2 (13th November, 2021):
Drove to Hundru Falls, Getelsud Dam and Johna Falls. Took the old Ranchi-Purulia Road. Road condition was very bad. Driving on top gear was a luxury. This route is best avoided. The feeder road to Hundru Falls was fantastic, a real pleasure driving on. However, many villages on the way with cattle and womenfolk with children on the road made driving dicey and cautious.
Since it had rained there was plenty of water all around.
Getelsud Dam falls on the way to Hundru Falls. The reservoir looks like a sea with its huge expanse of of water.
Thereafter, proceeded towards Johna Waterfalls.
All approach roads to the falls are in very good shape. There are stalls near parking place where one can get all types of packed and cooked food. Johna Falls is heavenly after rains and it is better to be prepared with raincoats as umbrellas become a burden.

Route (return journey): Oarmanjhi - Bokaro - Chas - Katras - Dhanbad - Govindpur (NH19) - Kumardhubi - Sitarampur.

The road condition was very good but with a lot of traffic movement.

BuriMa Jagadhatri Puja 2021 of Krishnanagar

Burima Jagaddhatri Puja organized by 'Chasapara Barowari Jagaddhatri Puja Committee' was held in Krishnanagar, Nadia district of West Bengal on Saturday, 2021-11-13.
Jagaddhatri Puja in Krishnagar takes place on the Sukla Nabami day of Bengali month Kartik and is celebrated on one day.

The Jagaddhatri Puja at Chasapara Barowari had started in 1772 (249 years ago) followed by its introduction at Rajbari (palace) of Krishnagar. The Goddess of Chasapara Barowari being the oldest one, is popularly known as "BURIMA".

The deity of Chasapara Barowari is embellished with over 5220 gms of gold ornaments and about same quantum of silver ornaments. These have been collected from the offerings of the devotees over the years. The Goddess is ornamented one night prior to the puja. The eyeballs of the lion are made of real diamonds.

Jagaddhatri Puja is the most awaited festival in Krishnanagar. Innumerable community Jagaddhatri Pujas are organized in the town. A day after the puja, specially trained bearers from nearby villages physically carry the idols on their shoulders for visajan (immersion) in the Jalangi River which flows along the town. The bearers have been doing the same task for generations.

On the intervening night of November 14 and 15, 2021 the idol of BuriMa and many others were taken for visarjan. Traditionally, the idols are taken for immersion late in the night till early morning.
People from all over the state congregate to view the frenzy of the 'visarjan' rituals.
