Soumillya Majumdar was witness to a terrible hair raising episode while driving out of Kolkata on NH19 (Durgapur Expressway), somewhere between Dankuni toll plaza and Palsit toll plaza on Sunday, 2020-11-22 morning.

The truck driver ahead of him was totally drunk and had no control on his vehicle. An innocent biker was thrown off his bike after the truck grazed him.

No further details are available about the fate of the biker or if at all any stern action was taken against the driver.

Bhubaneswar to Raipur via Khurda, Daspalla, Barpali - Indian Roadie Preferred Route/ Motoring Route

Indian Roadie Preferred Route/ Motoring Route/ best route for road trip from

Bhubaneswar to Raipur (by avoiding Cuttack, Manguli, Dhenkanal, Angul) is as follows:

Bhubaneswar - Khurda Bypass - Baghamari - Kantilo - Gania - Daspalla - Boudh - Sonepur - Binka - Barpali - Sohela - Raipur.

Since the Cuttack-Sambalpur highway is being widened, one can try the above mentioned alternative route as in November 2020.
One can start from Bhubaneswar at 7 am and reach Raipur at 4.30 pm via Khurda, Daspalla, Barpali.
Bhubaneswar - Khurda (NH16) section has a couple of diversions because of 6 laning work.
NH57 between Khurda and Nayagarh is as usual in a mess and has huge traffic.
Hence it's best to drive Baghamari - Kantilo - Gania - Daspalla to avoid jams. This route lesser traffic, mostly good roads but  goes through a couple of crowded small towns.
One can join NH57 at Daspalla.
NH57 from Daspalla to Sonepur is fantastic to drive. Initial 50 kms is a wonderful drive through thick forests. From Sonepur to Binka the road is good for 20 kms, and is uneven/ broken after that. The broken patches continue from Binka to Barpali. From Barpali to Sohela the road narrows a bit and the surface worsens. From Sohela to Raipur (old NH6) is very good. Arang to Raipur is very good, too.

Bhubaneswar to Kanha to Jabalpur and back - Indian Roadie Preferred Route and Itinerary in October 2020

A roadie from Bhubaneswar did a road trip from Bhubaneswar to Kanha and Bhedaghat/ Jabalpur in his own vehicle in October 2020.

The Indian Roadie Preferred Route/ Motoring Route/ route was as follows.

Day 1:
Bhubaneswar - Khurda Bypass - Baghamari - Kantilo - Gania - Daspalla - Bauda - Sonepur - Binka - Barpali - Sohela - Raipur.
(Since the Cuttack-Sambalpur highway is being widened, he tried the above mentioned alternative route).

He started from Bhubaneswar at 7 am and reached Raipur at 4.30 pm.
Bhubaneswar - Khurda (NH16) section had a couple of diversions because of 6 laning work.
NH57 between Khurda and Nayagarh is as usual in a mess and has huge traffic. Hence he took Baghamari - Kantilo - Gania - Daspalla to avoid it. This has much less traffic, mostly good roads but  goes through a couple of crowded small towns. He joined NH57 at Daspalla.
From Sohela to Raipur (old NH6) is excellent. Arang to Raipur is very good, too.

Day 2:
Raipur - Simga - Kawardha - Bhoramdev - Chilpi - Bichhiya - Sarhi Gate (Kanha).

He started at 7 am from Raipur and reached Kanha around 11.30 am.
Since he stayed in the outskirts of Raipur, he took the bypass (Ring Road number 3) to reach NH30. The bypass was uneven but had very little traffic in the morning. NH30 between Raipur and Simga is an excellent 6 lane concrete road. After that NH30 is a good 2 lane highway. There is road construction going on inside Bemetera town and that portion is messy. He took a detour from Kawardha to visit Bhoramdev temple, known as Khajuraho of Chhattisgarh. The small road from Bhoramdev to Chilpi has few ghat sections and has excellent views of the valley below. The road from Bichhiya to Sarhi gate goes through a few villages and is quite narrow in some places.

Day 3:
Kanha (Mukki Gate) - Baihar - Nainpur -Bhoma - Palari - Dhanora - Kahani - Dhuma -Chaukital - Bhedaghat.

He started from Kanha at 9.30 am and reached Bhedaghat at 2 pm.
From Kanha, most people suggested that he goes via  Mandla to Jabalpur but he took the above route.
Baihar to Nainpur is good, and goes through some patches of forests. Nainpur to Bhoma (SH12) is a mixed bag with few broken patches in between. From Bhoma there is a new concrete road for quite some distance. Then the road becomes narrow but the surface is decent with little traffic. From Dhuma, NH34 is an excellent 4 lane road. The last portion from Chaukital on Jabalpur bypass to Bhedaghat is a 4 lane concrete road that goes through some heavily populated areas.

Day 4:
Bhedaghat - Mandla - Chilpi - Kawardha - Simga - Raipur.

Started from Bhedaghat at 9.30 am and reached Raipur around 5.30 pm. Took NH30, initially marked as “new bypass road”, it is all good for about 35 - 40 kms. After that there are long stretches where road construction is going on and the road is completely dug up. There are stretches where the road has newly laid concrete surface. Some portions are very narrow because they have barricaded half of the road to lay concrete and one gets stuck behind trucks. After Mandla it is all good. Chilpi ghat section through the jungle  is a pleasure to drive. Bemetera was a mess when he crossed it in the afternoon with long and slow moving trucks in both directions.

Day 5:
Raipur - Sohela - Bargarh - Barpali - Binka - Sonepur - Daspalla - Nayagarh - Ranpur - Tangi - Bhubaneswar.

Started from Raipur at 8 am and reached Bhubaneswar at 6 pm. To avoid the bad roads between Sohela and Barpali, he drove via Bargarh. The 4 lane highway between Sohela and Bargarh is not smooth and had huge traffic, mostly 2 wheelers. Then the 2 lane NH26 between Bargarh and Barpali was also full of traffic. The extra 16 kms in this longer route is not worth the trouble. Took another alternate route from Nayagarh via Tangi. Nayagarh to Tangi was mostly good. But from Tangi to Bhubaneswar the NH16  has a few diversions because of 6 lane road work. He hit the evening peak hour traffic between Khurda and Bhubaneswar and got delayed a bit.

Hyderabad to Pune drive by Tanmoy Das on 2020-11-20

Like innumerable others in Indian Roadie, Tanmoy Das and his wife operating out of Hyderabad since the past couple of years were getting restless almost totally stuck up at home with a year old son inside the apartment and a beautiful 1 yr old white Ford Ecosport parked under the stilts of the building.
A sudden call to an old time friend in Pune on Friday, 2020-11-20 morning and me (Deep Banerjee) in Kolkata and the impromptu decision was made. They hit the newly constructed 4/ 6  lane Hyderabad to Pune NH65 (erstwhile, NH9) with still a couple of minutes to go before the clock in the car displayed 12 noon.
Their friend in Pune had demanded that the ubiquitous mutton biriyani from none other than Paradise in Hyderabad must be carried for him. A bag of biriyani to serve 5 adults and priced at ₹900 also found its cozy place in the car.
The narrow, potholes ridden 560+ kms long national highway has been relegated to history in less than 4 years. Only a few diversions remain in MH prior to reaching Solapur.
The Indian Roadie Preferred Route/ Motoring Route/ route for Hyderabad to Pune (Hyderabad_Pune) is Hyderabad - Nehru ORR touches NH65 immediately after the pharmaceutical manufacturing hub of Patancheru town - Zaheerabad - Naldurg - Solapur - Indapur - Pune (Hadapsar).
Tanmoy, the IndianRoadie was with me on the phone, off and on for almost 90 minutes till 8.30 pm when he reached his friend's place in Hadapsar.
His driving pace had considerably slowed down because of intermittent blinding rains between Indapur and Pune.
Moreover, he took his car off the NH65 at least twice not for off-roading but for his love for photography.
Btw, till 2015-16 facilities between Patancheru and Solapur weren't good at all. However, as in November 2020 innumerable fuel filling stations, restaurants and dhabas have cropped up on both sides of the road.

Vijayanagara will be the 31st district of Karnataka

Vijayanagara will be the 31st district of Karnataka. The decision has been taken by the Karnataka cabinet on Wednesday, 2020-11-18.
The new district will be carved out of erstwhile Bellary district.
Once Vijayanagara fully and officially transforms into a new district, great things are in store for the district especially in the form of tourism at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hampi which in antiquity was the capital of the mighty Vijayanagara empire.

Nilgai hit a Ford Ecosport in Rajasthan in mid November 2020

A Nilgai jumped on the brand new Ford Ecosport Titanium of Divyang Jain (bought in end July 2020) in mid November 2020. Divyang was on the move on a highway in Rajasthan, near Jaipur. He was obviously taken by surprise after the Nilgai hit his car. The car swerved off the highway.
Fortunately, there was no physical injury to any of the occupants in the car.
For the uninitiated, Nilgai is similar to the size of a bull and runs like a horse. They weigh over 150 kgs. They are a kind of  Antelope and can jump upto 4 ft.
Be extra cautious of Nilgais sprinting across the road while speeding on the Yamuna Expressway or on highways in Western UP, Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat.

Bangalore to Mangalore via Shiradi Ghat - Indian Roadie road condition on 2020-11-14

Route update by K. Akshay Pai on day of Kali Puja/ Diwali, viz. 2020-11-14:
Bengaluru to Mangalore via Shirady as of today.
Bangalore to Hassan - beautiful road as usual
Hassan to Sakleshpur- most of major potholes (as seen on 7th November) are patched and and it's a pretty drivable road. There are diversions and they too are patchy.
Sakleshpur to Shirady- it's unbearably bad.. it's become mini Ladakh. Fatal potholes , lot of dust, big groves, convoy of tankers, KSRTC buses with Vin Diesel drivers and massive pebbles .Extremely unfit for driving but enjoyable for off-road lovers.1st and 2nd gear affair. Took me 2 hours to cover.
Shirady start to end - it's beautiful as always , no road repairs or issues.
Shirady end to BC road stretch - unforgiving patchy roads and fatal potholes, took me 3 hours to complete even with a touring superbike. Again mini ladakh experience and enjoyable for off-road lovers. 1st and 2nd gear affair.
BC road to Mangalore - really good highway.

Bhubaneswar - Tadoba - Bbsr Indian Roadie Preferred Route and Itinerary in October 2015 by Hrushikesh Patra

Hrushikesh Patra drove from Bhubaneswar to Tadoba and Umred tiger reserve and back in end October 2015

Took Bhubaneswar - Cuttack - Anugul - Rerakhole - Sambalpur - Bargarh - Saraipalli - Raipur - Bhilai - Durg - Nagpur road for onward journey.
While returning he wanted to go to Berhampur, so took Umred - Pauni - Lakhandur - Sakoli - Raipur - Nuapada - Baliguda - Berhampur - Bhubaneswar route.

Day 1:
Bhubaneswar (8:15AM) - Anugul (11AM) -Sambalpur (3PM):
Most of the flyover work was complete in Bhubaneswar - Cuttack section. Somehow the usual heavy truck traffic was missing in the Cuttack - Anugul stretch. There was a big roadblock after Anugul  because of an accident, he took a 30 km detour to avoid that.
Sambalpur (3PM) - Raipur (8PM): 4 laning was complete till the Chhattisgarh border. Did a bit of wrongside driving at the border checkpost to pass the queue of trucks. Inside Chhattisgarh, 4 laning work is going on and hence there are a lot of diversions. Some stretches have new tarmac on one side and some sections are pretty bad with big potholes. Crossing Saraipalli/Basna/Arang towns was painful because of evening time traffic. Arang to Raipur was very good 4 lane road.

Day 2:
Raipur (10:20AM) - Nagpur (3:15PM):  There was very heavy traffic through Raipur -Bhilai - Durg. After that it was a very easy drive on that dual carriageway except for few stretches of 2 lane roads some of which are rough.

Day 3:
Nagpur (11:30AM) - Tadoba (Moharli Gate, 2:30PM): NH7 till Jamb and the SH6 till Tembhurda is good 4 lane. We should have taken SH6 till Warora but took a left at Tembhurda for a shortcut to Shegaon, it was a single road.
Moharli Gate - Shegaon - Khadsangi - Navegaon Gate: 2 hour drive. Good single lane road till Shegaon and then a wide 2 lane till Khadsangi.
Navegaon Gate (1:15PM) - Chimur- Bhisi -Umred - Thana (Near Karandhla Gate, 3PM): Good 2 lane roads with occasional potholed stretches.

Day 4:
Umred (11AM) - Pauni - Lakhandur - Sakoli -Raipur (4:30PM): Good 2 lane roads till we reached the 4 laned NH6 at Sakoli.

Day 5:
Raipur (8:40AM) - Mahasamud - Nuapada -Khariar - Belgan - Baliguda - G.Udayagiri - Bhanjanagar - Berhampur (9:30PM): This is known as NH217 (Raipur - Gopalpur highway). Till Nuapada it is a very good 2 lane highway. After that it is a single lane road for 50 km with completely broken shoulders. After that road widening is going on in patches for next 150km or so. From G. Udayagiri, it is a fantastic 2 lane road till Berhampur.

Day 6:
Berhampur - Bhubaneswar via NH5 (old number).

Distance a car will travel before stopping completely after applying brakes.

The distance a car will travel before stopping completely after applying brakes.
Subhadip Nandy, a roadie from Kolkata has very well explained the subject.
The roadie has been driving since mid 2000s and had his share of fast driving when he was young. With age and experience he has matured. He has stated some facts. Beginner drivers should know how what distance a car will travel before stopping completely after applying brakes.
113 m means 370 ft. Driving at 140 kmph will mean that after applying brakes, the car will travel  410-440 ft before coming to a stop.
If driven at 80 kmph. the car will only need 226 ft to stop.
He confessed that that till 80 kmph one can easily keep the car under control even if something untoward happens suddenly, viz. a person, animal, etc comes in lane, or the vehicle in front applies sudden brakes. The car also behaves normally. But above 100kmph, a host of other factors including aerodynamics comes into play. The car IS NOT in your control in any sudden event.
PS : In his own words, "I drove at 130-140 regularly at one point of time, don't be an idiot like me."
If someone is interested in the maths: (see the thinking time  and then the stopping distance)
http://www.amsi.org.au/teacher_modules/pdfs/Maths_delivers/Braking5.pdf
The figures were taken by him from the following link :
https://www.drivingtests.co.nz/resources/how-to-calculate-braking-distances/
Here are some figures for a mid sized car with good tyres on a dry road with good grip vis-a-vis some figures for the same car on a wet road which he has shared.

Hyderabad to Aluva (KL) and back road trip in XUV500 by Allen Varghese

Allen Varghese drove from Hyderabad to Aluva in Kerala, a distance of 1150 kms on 10th July 2020.
Vehicle: Mahindra XUV500 W7 AT (October 2019 model)
Started at 4 am from Hyderabad. Crossed Kurnool at 7 am. Breakfast cooked at home was near Anathpur. Crossed Hosur around 1 pm. Reached Tamil Nadu - Kerala border at 6.30 pm. Reached his home town in Kerala at 9.30 pm. Time 17.5 hrs.
Return drive was on 2nd August 2020 via the same route.
Total to and fro distance covered: 2540 kms.
Fuel consumed: 175 ltrs.

In July 2020 there wasn't much of traffic in Bangalore city. So he decided to go through the city. Other option was to take a detour from Devanahalli which which would have taken him to Hosur or Shoolagiri. In that case roads would not have been good and he would have had to pass through quite a few villages.

Hyundai i10 Grand repainted blue at Indian Roadie Preferred Workshop in Kolkata

This Hyundai i10 Grand got it's finishing touches after a change of colour from a totally different lighter shade to this lovely metallic blue at an 'Indian Roadie Preferred Workshop' in Kolkata. The car was handed over to its owner in October 2020. He was left spellbound.
Any authorized service station will hang their head in shame seeing the quality of finish. It's needless to mention that the cost involved was a fraction of what it would have been at so called authorized workshops.
Detroit returned newbie 'know it all' roadies will start salivating seeing this.
BTW, please don't seek favors from me by asking for references. Suggestions will NOT be available for free.

Chennai to Thiruchendur road trip in late October 2020

Single day return ride from Chennai to Thiruchendur and back on Saturday, 2020-10-31 in Yamaha FZ25 by K Veanu.

Roads are fine all through till Thuthukkudi. Thereafter the state highway had lots of speed breakers and many rough patches.

Indian Roadie Preferred Route for Chennai to Thiruchendur

Chennai - Trichy - Madurai - Thuthukkudi - Thiruchendur.

Left home in Chennai for Thiruchendur at 5 am. Reached by 2 pm.  Returned home at 2 am. Returned via the same route.

Filling stations within Chennai city limits were not open at 5.30 am. Filled fuel at a highway pump at Perungalathur.  Every toll plaza had long queues of vehicles. Small time vendors were busy hawking their chores. No masks at most places.
Our fellow roadie had assumed that temple will be devoid of crowd, only to realise that all devotees thought so. Signages clearly said kids less than 10 yrs and elders above 65 yrs won't be permitted inside the temple. That was only on the board. People of all ages were going inside with the same enthusiasm. He did 9 pradhakshinams which was pending for a long time. He tried maintaining social distancing to maximum possible extent. Did darshan from a distance without getting inside the temple and got back on saddle by 5 pm.  Completed early dinner by 7 pm at a restaurant called Mangalam Restaurant on the Kariapatti bypass.
Fuel break was at Samayapuram around 9.45 pm.

Covid Perspective:
His was a KA registered bike. Was not stopped anywhere. If you are coming from other state don't try your luck. Do whatever is necessary. Check before entering. As of today you just need e registration of details before entering the state of TN and need epass for hill stations.
Seems life in TN has almost returned to normal with folks roaming freely. Temples are crowded, restaurants are crowded.  Seems now Corona had to learn to live with us in TN. Sad state of affairs. People are not bothered. So keep a hand sanitizer handy and carry spare masks. If it falls, before you pick it, someone will stomp. That much of social distancing is followed.
Saw a lot of Chennai registered vehicles in Thoothukkudi. Few KA registered too. They did not look like tourists. Possibly most of them have moved back to their hometown with their bikes and cars.

Maruti Zen Estilo and Maruti Alto blocked ingress and engress to and from my house on 2020-10-29 at 2.45 pm

The Dutta brothers (Amiya and Arun) of Beliaghata, Kolkata had been purposely parking their cars WB06H1392 (Zen Estilo) and WB02Z3679 (Alto) in such a way that ingress and engress to and from my house was jeopardized. Their house situated at a T-junction is just two buildings away from our house.
Prior to January - February 2020, it was only the blue Alto which the younger brother Arun Dutta used to park where the Zen Estilo can be spotted in the attached videos. Ingress and engress was extremely challenging because the Alto used to be parked at the T junction in spite of the family owning a covered underground garage of their new house which they completed building around 2016-2017.
The running board on both sides of my VW Vento sedan has been severely damaged because of the stubborn act of the Dutta brothers. The alloy wheels of my car have deep scratches and the VW logo on the hub of an alloy was lost.  All this damage happened after my car grazed the stone cladding on the roadside quite a few times.
For atleast 2.5 years or more prior to the onset of the pandemic and the subsequent lockdown w.e.f 2020-03-23, I have politely requested them a couple of times to keep the blue car in the garage or elsewhere. My requests fell on deaf ears.
The elder brother Amiya Dutta bought the pre-owned Zen Estilo around January or February 2020.
From the first week of July 2020, the brothers started keeping both the cars outside on the road. They even incited the owner-driver of a white App Cab to park his Maruti Dzire diagonally opposite my house on the narrow road.

On 2020-10-29 at 2.45 pm, I (Deep Banerjee) tried to take my VW Vento out, first time after 2020-03-23, i.e. after start of lockdown in West Bengal. I was driving to the car workshop because the reverse gear of my car was not engaging.
I got stuck because there was no way I could have taken my car out.
It took Arun Dutta over 2 minutes to respond to my continuous honking. His reply standing on the upper floor terrace was "horn dilei gaari shore jaabe na" (my car is not going to move automatically by your continuous honking). I could drive my car out only after he came down a few minutes later and backed up the Zen Estilo.
Friends, imagine yourself in my place and tell me honestly if any of you'll would have tolerated this stubborn nonsense of a neighbour. Would any of you'll have tolerated the damage of your own car because of no fault of yours!
What's even more scary is that in the event of exigencies or an emergency, the irresponsible act of the Duttas who are totally bereft of any civic sense can turn out to be fatal for me or my dear ones.
