Foodie Roadie - Haaran Majhi Sweet Shop, Kalighat

A stone's throw away from the Maa Kali temple in Kalighat in South Kolkata exists this 150+ years old Haaran Majhi Sweet Shop on Debnarayan Road. The business was started by Haaran Majhi, resident of Deulti in Howrah district in 1860. 

The fourth generation comprising of Bubai Majhi and Raju Majhi manages the business which even in April 2024 does not flaunt a signboard to announce its heritage roots. 

Sweets for Maa Kali's official bhog (prasad) is manufactured by this confectioner. 

They make yummy rasogollas, flat rasogollas, lyangchas, madanamohan, etc all priced between ₹4 and ₹10 only.

 হারান মাঝির দোকানের সব থেকে বড়ো বিশেষত্ব হলো এই দোকান থেকেই কালীঘাটের মায়ের ভোগের জন্য মিষ্টি যায়। মায়ের সন্ধ্যারতির সময় কিংবা  শয়ন এর সময় এই দোকানের মিষ্টিই মাকে নিবেদন করা হয়ে থাকে । দোকানের কোনো রকম জাঁকজমক সাজসজ্জা নেই বলে , কলকাতার বহু মানুষ এই দোকানের খোঁজ জানেন না । 

মিষ্টির মধ্যে বহু চর্চিত চিরাচরিত, চ্যাপ্টা রসগোল্লা ছাড়াও, শতাব্দী প্রাচীন গোল রসগোল্লা , ক্ষীরের চপ, মদনমোহন, ল্যাংচা, কিংবা পান্তুয়া ,এই সবেরই প্রাধান্য পাওয়া যাবে।  কোনোরকম আধুনিক বা মিশ্র কিছু এখানে আশা করার নয় একেবারেই । 

আর স্বাদ ? অনবদ্য । দাম শুনলে হাসবেন , এখনকার যুগে মাত্র 4 টাকা থেকে 10 টাকা অবধি ।

It was a long awaited meeting (Indian Roadie GTG) with Indian Roadie Satyam Mukherjee (Workplace: Bangalore. Presently working from home in Arambagh) which finally happened on Saturday 2024-04-20 evening at the Indian Roadie Adda Joint at Mio Amore, IA265, Salt Lake, Kolkata. 

He is a regular on the Bangalore to Kolkata and Kolkata to Bangalore route, so regular that the car has already clocked about 62,000 kms in the past 18 odd months since he bought it in 2022. 

Thank you Satyam for driving your Hyundai Creta SX a whopping 83 kms each way (Arambagh to Kolkata) with a sole objective of meeting me.

Road trip on bikes from Delhi to Rishikesh and back by Sanjeev Mukhi and friends in April 2024

Indian Roadie Sanjeev Mukhi went for a bike ride from Delhi to Rishikesh and back to Delhi with his wife Dr Savita and 11 more biker friends. The following travelogue was penned by him in the first person. 

Day 1 (13/4/2024): 

Stating time 4:30 morning from Sector 62, Noida UP. 

Participants: Eleven bikes and twelve riders.

Age group: 35 to 62 yrs.

Indian Roadie Sanjeev Mukhi and his wife aged 60 yrs. 

Rode Kawasaki z650.

Distance between Delhi to Tapovan, Rishikesh was 234 kms. 

Had Breakfast at Khatoli midway.

Had juice break at Haridwar Ganga Barrage.

Visited Beetle Ashram which used to be occupied by Mahesh Yogi ji.

Also visited sacred waterfall at Tapovan. 

Stayed at camp site near waterfall. 

Day 2 (14/4/2024): 

Woke up early morning 

Visited another waterfall after trekking through some very steep track. Visited a couple of yoga ashrams.

Enjoyed good breakfast at Shiva Cafe.

Packed our bags and started our bikes for the return ride at around 12 noon.

Rode to Laxman Jhula and enjoyed two hours at the Ganga River. 

Enjoyed cups of tea at Buddha Cafe.

Started our journey back to Delhi around 2 pm.

Halted midway at an Haldiram outlet for lunch and snacks.

Reached Delhi safe and sound around 9 pm. 

Faced lot of traffic after Mujaffarnagar due to election rallies and Babasaheb Ambedkar Jayanti.  

Conclusion:  

Everyone rode responsibly in a convoy with speed not exceeding 80 kmph and nobody overtook each other. 

The summer heat resulted in dehydration of some of the bikers. Long rides need good physical and mental strength.
