Thane to Mangalore drive in Tata Nexon with wife and child in September 2020 by Ganpati Ulhas Shanbag

Ganpati Ulhas Shanbag drove from his home in Thane (MH) to his native place in Mangalore (KA) with wife and child on Friday, 11th September 2020. 

Car owned: Tata Nexon, registered in September 2020. 
He followed the 'Indian Roadie Preferred Route' for Thane to Mangalore, viz. 
Thane - Pune - Satara - Belgaum - Hubli - Gokarna - Murudeshwar - Kundapur - Marvanthe Beach - Udupi - Mangalore.
The drive was mostly on National Highways. Road condition was not bad. However due to heavy rain some parts were affected and repair work was being done.
Total distance (home to home): Slightly over 1200 kms. 
Time of departure from Thane: 5.00 am. 
Time of arrival in Mangalore: 9.30 pm. 
Total duration: 16.5 hrs. 
The family carried chapati, bhaji, tea, coffee and water bottles. They only stopped for breakfast, lunch, refuelling and biological breaks. Most importantly they carried a dustbin to throw garbage rather than making other places dirty. 
Being a brand new car, Ganpati Ulhas Shanbag went on to add a small review of his worthy possession: 
Prior to buying the Nexon, he had a Maruti Suzuki Swift 2015 model. He has admitted that initially he felt immense lag in the Nexon. Throughout the journey he never went beyond 80 kmph. He observed that the fuel mileage was 15.9 kmpl in the MID. While calculating by the tankful to tankful method the fuel economy was surprisingly the same. 
He covered the total distance of 1200 kms in 16.5 hours, drive was good, seats are very comfortable, clutch was much softer  than what he could imagine, felt no tiredness during journey, felt fresh and happy even after driving for so many hours. 
The owner's final verdict: Overall a pretty good car.

Hyderabad - Guntur - Hyderabad in self drive Revvcar on 7th, 8th October 2020 by Adv Abhijit Sarkar

Indian Roadie Adv Abhijit Sarkar, resident of Kolkata had to fly Kolkata - Hyderabad on 2020-10-06 for work. He had pre-booked a Revv self drive Hyundai Creta with the 'unlimited' option. 

Day 1: After completion of formalities and topping up of the fuel tank at an IOCL filling station near the airport, the car was handed over to Abhijit at 1.30 pm. Rest of the day was spent working in Hyderabad itself. 

Day 2: It involved a shade more than a 350 kms drive from Hyderabad (Banjara Hills) (8 am) to Guntur (1.30 pm). 

After the professional assignment which got over at round 6 pm, night stay was at the the comfortable 'Indian Roadie Preferred Hotel' Geetha Residency in Guntur. 

Day 3 (2020-10-08):  Our roadie friend checked out of hotel in Guntur at 8 am. He stopped for refuelling at Padma Filling Station (BPCL) NH117A. The owner was mighty impressed hearing everything about our highly acclaimed forum, viz. Indian Roadie. A couple of telecalls and exchange of a few photos via WhatsApp followed. The decision was made that Padma Filling Station will henceforth be our new Indian Roadie Preferred Filling Station on NAM Expressway in Andhra Pradesh. The owner was so happy that he fetched a whole lot of fresh vegetables from his nursery, got them packed in a bag and gifted them to Abhijit to carry back to Kolkata. 

A few kms fter leaving Padma Filling Station it was a slow drive on Pondugala Bridge over Krishna River while clicking a video. 

Abhijit's next stop was to buy a few boxes of 'peda' and gulp down a few bottles of thick and chilled flavoured milk from the milk parlour attached to the Heritage Dairy plant in Narketpally on NH65. 

Thereafter, it was the final drive of approximately 75 kms on NH65 with the majestic gate of a now closed Ramoji Film City on the left and further down directly to Hyderabad airport and handing over the car to a Revv executive at around 3.30 pm. Amount paid to Revv was a shade lesser than ₹9000 for almost 3 days and 2 nights and approximately 650 kms on the odometer. It goes without saying that cost of diesel amounting to approximately ₹2000 and applicable toll charges had to be additionally borne by Abhijit. 

Our roadie was back home in Kolkata by 9.30 pm.

Guntur (exit NH16) - Sattenapalle - Dhulipalla (Loyola Institute of Technology and Management) - Piduguralla (intersection with NAM Expressway) - Brahmanapalli (AP) - Pondugala Bridge on Krishna River, south of Wazirabad - Miryalaguda bypass (TS) - Narketpalli (intersection of NAM Eway and NH65) - Hyderabad (Nehru Outer Ring Road crossing with NH65). 

Bangalore to Delhi drive in Tata Nexon with family in early October 2020 by Ranveer Singh

Ranveer Singh (Workplace: Bangalore, Hometown: Faridabad) completed driving Bangalore to Delhi in 3 days with 2 night's stay enroute. He was with his wife and two daughters. 

Vehicle owned: Nexon 2019 XM Diesel 

Place of stay enroute: 
They started journey on 3rd October 2020, reached Nagpur by evening and stayed in Treebo Tryst Pavilion. Next day stayed in Hotel Kuber Vatika, Sagar. 

Safety measures because of Covid situation: 
Before refilling of fuel, he ensured that the filling stations accept Google Pay. 
He stocked enough food, water, use and throw bed sheets, sanitizer bottles and disinfectant sprays. He also bought an inflatable bed for kids in car. 
The Fastag in his car was charged with ₹3500 (to avoid any contact in Corona times). 
4th (minor service) was completed before start of journey. 

Journey details: 
1. Started at 5.30 am on October 3, 2020 from Banglore.
2. First small break for tea and fuel in Hyderabad. Second break was near Adilabad. Reached Nagpur at 8.30 pm via Kurnool, Hyderabad, Adilabad.
3. After a good sleep and good breakfast in Nagpur started at 9.30 am reached Sagar 7.00 pm on October 4, 2020 via Chindwara, Seoni, Lakhnadon, Narsinghpur. 
4. On October 5, 2020 (Day 3) started from Sagar at 6.00 am reached home at Faridabad at 6 pm via Jhansi, Gwalior, Agra. 

Total fuel (diesel): 110 liters. 
Distance covered: 2212 kms. 
Fuel efficiency: 20.10 kmpl (23.7 kmpl shown on meter). 
Toll: ₹2700. 

Gurgaon to Allahabad drive in Tata Nexon on 2020-10-01 by Devanshu Mehrotra

Devanshu Mehrotra (workplace in Gurgaon, hometown in Allahabad) is a frequent roadie on the Gurgaon - Allahabad and Allahabad - Gurgaon section of the Golden Quadrilateral. 

He left Gurgaon on 1st October 2020 in his Tata Nexon and reached Allahabad the same evening. 

It was a drive of 11 hrs 30 mins approximately.

In normal circumstances, he usually stops at the Food Street, after the second toll plaza on Yamuna Expressway for breakfast and at Deepu Chauhan's Dhaba just before Kanpur for lunch. He has highly recommended Deepu Chauhan's Dhaba for food.

This time though due to the prevailing Covid situation, he had home packed food. 

He always takes the Indian Roadie Preferred Route, viz. Gurgaon - Yamuna Expressway - Agra Lucknow Expressway till Etawah - Kanpur - Allahabad.

Moving car hit by stone on Pune to Solapur highway

A lady and her mother were travelling from Pune to Latur (350km) via NH65, viz. Pune - Solapur highway. 

An obvious question would be, when did the following incident happen? 
Not too sure. It surely happened sometime in 2015 or prior to that. 
At around 1:00 am they heard a loud bang but driver said it was nothing.
Next day they discovered this hole but were clueless how it got there.
Fast forward to next week & there was an article in newspaper about a robbery on NH65.
Modus operandi -
Throw stone on the vehicles. and when the vehicle stops to inquire what's wrong with vehicle the robbers come out of their hiding place and rob passengers.

Preview of Atal Rohtang Tunnel

India's strategic Atal Tunnel on the Leh-Manali highway is all set to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on  2020-10-03. The ceremony will also be attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Chief Of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat and Army Chief General M M Naravane. 

The strategic tunnel - which is the world's longest tunnel situated at over 10,000 feet reduces the distance between Manali and Leh by 46 km.
The 8.8 km long horseshoe shaped tunnel is situated under the 3,978 metre Rohtang Pass in the Pir Panjal range. It is in the Solang Valley near Manali. 
The Atal Tunnel would be a boon to the residents of Lahaul who remain cut off from the rest of the country for nearly six months in winters due to heavy snowfall.
The ambitious Atal Tunnel would provide all-weather connectivity to Leh and the forward areas of Ladakh.
For all-weather connectivity up to Leh-Ladakh, additional tunnels would have to be built on the 475 km Manali-Leh route so that the high passes do not impede movement due to heavy snowfall.
A 13.2 km long tunnel would have to be built to negotiate the 16,040 feet high Baralacha Pass and another 14.78 km long tunnel would be required at the Lachung La Pass at 16,800 feet and the third 7.32 km long tunnel would be required at Tanglang La Pass at 17,480 feet.

Get the 'Filling Station Contact Details' - a request to all members/ followers

The moment you exit the highway and turn left to drive into a filling station (or right if there's a legal gap in the median divider), STOP for 5 - 7 secs and click one or more photos of the facade of the filling station by jutting your hands out of the window or from within the car (if it's raining). 

Fill the 'right' fuel ⛽ and keep watching the display on the dispensing machine. Thereafter, pay up. 

Walk over to the showroom/ office glass window/ wall. 

Spot the board or wall mentioning the:  

* name and address of the filling station, 

* contact details of the oil marketing company official(s) and 

* contact details of the filling station owner. 

(Mobile numbers and designations are always visible along with e-mail ID). 

Click one or more crystal clear photos and satisfy yourself that the photos are clear. 

Nobody will stop you from  clicking photos of the contact details. 

Get back to your car and get the live GPS location. 

WhatsApp/ Facebook Messenger Inbox me these three critical information (facade photos, contact details photos, live GPS location) before driving out of the filling station. 

In a spare diary jot down the cumulative odometer reading, time, quantity of fuel filled, amount paid, name of filling station. 

Make this a regular habit. 

Please don't ignore the importance of assisting me to build up a robust database of #FillingStationContactDetails for the safety and convenience of all. 

No road travel/ automotive forum in India has the intellect to think about such safety hacks.

MORTH Notification dated 2020-09-23 with respect to Amendments in CMVR 2019

MoRTH notifies amendments in Central Motor Vehicle Rules. 

Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has notified amendments in Central Motor Vehicle Rules facilitating  implementation of Electronic enforcement, Maintenance of Vehicular Documents through Information Technology portal with effect from 1st of next month.
The Ministry in a statement said, use of IT services and electronic monitoring will result in better enforcement of Traffic Rules in the country and will lead to removing harassment of drivers and would facilitate the citizens. The  amendment inter-alia provides for the definition for Challan, Portal ed as a requirement for  providing the services through IT and further the enforcement of electronic monitoring and enforcement. It said, details of driving licences disqualified or revoked by the licensing authority shall be recorded chronologically in the portal and such record shall be reflected on a regular basis on the portal has been provided for.  Thus, the record shall be maintained electronically and further the driver behavior would be monitored.
The Ministry said, provisions have been made for the procedure for Production and Obtaining Certificates in physical as well as electronic form, the validity, issuance of such documents and further the date and time stamping of inspection and identity of the Officer to be recorded. It has been provided that if the details of the documents are found validated through the electronic means by the enforcement officer then physical forms of such documents will not be demanded for inspection, including in cases where there is an offence made out necessitating seizure of any such documents.

Union Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) has recently issued notifications regarding various amendments in Central Motor Vehicle Rules 1989 requiring implementation of enforcement, Maintenance of Vehicular Documents and E-Challans through portal w.e.f 1.10.2020 for better monitoring and enforcement of MV Rules
Use of IT services and electronic monitoring will result in better enforcement of Traffic Rules in the country and will lead to removing harassment of drivers and would facilitate the citizen.
This was required after Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act 2019 was passed and was published on 9th August, 2019. 
Accordingly, the rules for amendment to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules 1989 for certain provisions of the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act 2019  were published through GSR 584 (E)  dated 25 September 2020. The  amendment inter-alia provides for the definition for Challan, Portal inserted as requirement for  providing the services through IT and further the enforcement of electronic monitoring and enforcement. 
Details of driving licences disqualified or revoked by the licensing authority shall be recorded chronologically in the portal and such record shall be reflected on a regular basis on the portal has been provided for.  Thus the record shall be maintained electronically and further the driver behavior would be monitored. 
Provisions have been made for the  procedure for Production and Obtaining Certificates in physical as well as electronic form, the validity, issuance of such documents and further the date and time stamping of inspection and identity of the Officer to be recorded.  It has been provided that if the details of the documents are found validated through the electronic means by the enforcement officer then physical forms of such documents shall not be demanded for inspection, including in cases where there is an offence made out necessitating seizure of any such documents.
Further upon demanding or inspecting any documents, the date and time stamp of inspection and identity of the police officer in uniform or any other officer authorized by the State Government, shall be recorded on the Portal. This would help in unnecessary re-checking or inspection of vehicles and further would remove harassment to the drivers. 
It has been provided that the use of handheld communications devices while driving shall solely be used for route navigation in such a manner that shall not disturb the concentration of the driver while driving.
Further through notification GSR 586  (E) dated 25 September 2020 certain amendments in the Motor Vehicles (Driving) Regulations 2017 have been made to align to the Amendment in the Act and the CMVR 1989 like use of handheld device, inspection of documents in electronic form etc.
The S.O. (E) 3311 dated  25; Sep 2020 notification provides for enforcing certain provision of the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act 2019 w.e.f. 1st Oct 2020 for which the aforesaid rules are being published.
The S.O. (E) 3310 dated  25 September 2020 provides for the conditions for the State Government to consider for specifying a multiplier to the amount of the penalties
The S.O. (E) dated 25 Sept 2020 provides for the order that the penalties for violation of The Motor Vehicles (Driving) Regulations, 2017 shall be in accordance with Section 177A to the extent that the penalties for such violations are not specifically provided for otherwise under the Act.
