Do not ignore the check engine light

Those who are seeing the Check Engine light (MIL/ Malfunction Indicator Lamp) on their speedometer console, please don't ignore. It will affect the ECM bit by bit. The cost of a new ECM (with coding) is approximately ₹75,000. A car with a faulty ECM is as bad as a scrapped car.

While it seems like the scariest, this light is one the most ambiguous because it relates to anything having to do with the car's engine and emissions system. The potential issue could be as minor as a loose wire or worn solenoid. Or it could mean something far more serious is wrong in the heart of the engine itself.

Should the light turn on and the vehicle suddenly begin behaving erratically or making strange noises, pull over immediately and call for a tow. This means there’s a far more serious problem, such as a misfire that could permanently damage the car’s engine. Ignoring a blinking check-engine light could mean putting yourself at risk, and ruining your car’s powertrain.

Get the car scanned using an OBD (On Board Diagnostic tool). If no faults are revealed after a thorough scanning, it clearly implies that the problems in your car need better OBD scanner and upgraded software.

Note: Even some small garages operated/ owned by experienced mechanic(s) in India have highly sophisticated OBDs and softwares.
