The iconic Jawahar Tunnel, a 5-kilometer twin-tube passage linking Banihal to Qazigund on the old Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, is set to reopen soon after a major renovation by the BRO's Project BEACON.
Upgrades include high-definition CCTV cameras, advanced fire-fighting systems, efficient exhaust fans, and enhanced lighting. Built in 1956, the tunnel retains its historical importance while meeting modern safety standards. The reopening is expected around mid December 2024, ensuring continued connectivity and serving as an alternative route for fuel tankers and emergencies.
