It had rained heavily in Asansol, West Bengal throughout the day on 2024-08-02. Roads got flooded although it's unusual in Asansol. At around 7 pm, a young man driving a Hyundai Creta who was familiar with the topography of the area off the 3 kms stretch leading towards Asansol Engineering College (on Asansol bypass) from Burnpur crossing (on old GT Road) decided to turn right and venture ahead over a normally dry culvert which also was fully submerged and water was gushing over it.
Bystanders had repeatedly warned him against driving on the culvert. The over adventurous inexperienced man got swept away along with his car because of the water current. His body was dead was recovered quite a few hours later.
Lesson: Never underestimate the power of water flowing over a road or bridge.
