It's best to break the journey from Guwahati to Tawang in two parts, viz.
Guwahati - Bomdila;
Bomdila - Tawang;
and same route on the way back.
The journey can be in three parts, too, viz. Guwahati - Tezpur,
Tezpur - Bomdila,
Bomdila - Tawang.
Guwahati - Bomdila is long but doable. As you hit the mountains you will find quite a few sections of patchy roads with road-works going on. You will have to start very early as the days are short!
If at leisure, ideally one can stop at Nameri, approx 20 km before Bhalukpong where you enter into Arunachal.
Stay at Nameri in a camp be absolutely worth it. The camp is amazing, the Mishing villages are beautiful and a boat ride on the river is very relaxing.
Indian Road Preferred Itinerary:
One can do Guwhati - Nameri (1 night) - Dirang (1 night) - Tawang (2 nights) - Bomdila (1 night) - Kaziranga (2 nights) - Guwahati to soak in the real beauty of the topography.
