I suppose it was in 1986. A St. Xavier's College classmate of mine, Punyabrata Biswas (Bablu) was learning to drive the launch model of a Maruti 800 which his mother had bought for family use. It was a beautiful brand new chocolate brown coloured car (WNF3309). We were out for a short spin to Gol Park in Kolkata in the evening. While returning to his house near Padmashri, Bablu stopped to treat Bijit Ghosh Dastidar (another classmate) and me to tasty rasogollas and samosas from a famous sweetmeat shop on S.C.Mullick Road at Ganguly Bagan Crossing.
After we were seated in the car for the final leg of drive back home, Bablu had to back up the car a bit to move ahead from parked position because of some obstruction on the front left hand side.
I was seated in the front passenger seat.
Everytime, Bablu engaged the reverse gear and struggled to look back, I shifted the lever to neutral position on the sly. The panic and frustration on Bablu's face after 5 - 6 attempts made Bijit and me laugh out loud 😅.
Sharmistha Biswas, can't recall if we have ever narrated this incident to you 😃.
