Specially-abled man voluntarily managing traffic run over by bus after coming into the blind spot of a bus in Kolkata on 2024-03-27

A specially-abled man who used to voluntarily manage traffic at the Rathtala Crossing on BT Road in Belghoria, Kolkata (viz. the 4 point crossing near Nazrul Mancha, Kamarhati Municipalty office) was killed in a road accident on Wednesday 2024-03-27 evening. The specially-abled man, Priyotosh Sarkar alias Sanjay from Ariadaha used to live with his mother. For the past 30 years, Sarkar has helped the traffic cops in managing traffic at Rathtala voluntarily. As he was specially abled, he couldn't be inducted as a civic volunteer. To help him to run his family, cops used to raise funds for him every month from other police personnel and give the money to Sarkar. Also unofficially, a khaki dress was given to him from the Kamarhati Municipality.
On the fateful evening, while Sanjay was managing traffic standing in the middle of B T Road, he came into the blind spot of a passenger bus coming from Feeder Road. Immediately after the accident, the bus driver tried to flee but other police personnel chased and caught the accused. Sarkar was rushed to Sagore Dutta Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Police have registered a case against the offending bus driver on charges of death due to negligence and rash driving.
Typical of the press and police, they are claiming that the bus had jumped the traffic signal and when Sanjay tried to stop the bus, he was hit and run over by the offending vehicle. To make the case stronger, police have also claimed that the bus driver was drunk.

Luggage carriers on cars with private registration plates are 'possibly' legal

The Facebook Reel shows a police officer stopping a Toyota Innova with private registration plate (black letters on white background) which has a roof luggage carrier installed in it. The video clearly shows the police officer telling the driver that should any policeman in any state stop a car with private registration plate (like ours in Indian Roadie and associated forums) for penalizing us, we roadies will have the liberty to ask the officers on duty to ask for the Motor Vehicle Act section under which a luggage carrier is considered illegal in a privately registered passenger car within India.

Incidentally, the police officer in the video is a popular face on social media.

This video will leave a lot of us (including myself) confused. Can someone care to clarify if luggage carriers on roofs of privately registered vehicles are indeed legal 🤔🤔🤔🤔

For quite some time we roadies were under the impression that luggage carriers are/were legal in passenger cars with commercial registration plates only.

What exactly are the Indian Roadie Police Directives 🤔

Newbie drivers who are Tata car owners are a hazard for other road users

Once upon a time I used to remain mighty scared of Tata Sumos and Tata 407s, irrespective of whether they would approach me from the front or from behind. The demographic and psychographic profile of 'murkh' drivers of those vehicles were a sure hazard for other road users.
However, since the past 6 - 7 years, safety ratings, DKL, build quality and other such nonsense started doing the rounds and people who were fit to roll discarded cycle tyres with a stick on dusty roads in towns and villages started owning cars rolled out by the same manufacturer after buying B.Tech/ MBA degrees from the 7300 odd tech and b-schools. The Qualified Uneducated self centered buggers are not at all High On Cognition. It's because of them that roads have become even more unsafe for other road users.

Shelf life and maximum speed of tyres

Knowing the shelf life and maximum speed of tyres is crucial for a safe driving experience.

Did you know that the speed rating for each tyre is indicated by a letter on the tire wall, ranging from L to H?

Additionally, the tire's shelf life is indicated by a four-digit number on the wall, with the first two digits indicating the week of manufacture and the last two indicating the year. It's important to note that a tire's validity is typically two to three years from the date of manufacture.

Therefore, it's crucial to ensure that your tyres can withstand the pressure of high speeds to avoid accidents.

Many tyre explosions occur due to increased speed, and this can be prevented by checking the letter indicated on your tyres. Each wheel or tire has a certain speed rating, with the letter L meaning a maximum speed of 120 km/h and the letter H meaning above 210 km/h.

The letter L means a maximum speed of 120 km.

... And the letter M means 130 km.
And the letter N means 140 km
And the letter P means 150 km.
And the letter Q means 160 km.
The letter R means 170 km.
And the letter H means above 210 km.

Stay safe on the road by being aware of your tire's maximum designed speed and shelf life.

EV charging infrastructure vandalized and stolen in Chandigarh

It's unimaginable to what extent some rogues in India can go to to be a cog in the wheels of India's all-round development to get in place electric vehicle (EV) support infrastructure in place.

Chennai to Gandikota - Indian Roadie Preferred Route

We had a memorable trip to Gandikota and Belum caves on 23rd and 24th Dec.
Route taken as follows from Chennai
Tiruvallur, Thiruttani, Puttur, Vontimitta (one can stop and awe at Kodanda Ramaswamy temple) onto Kadapa. Then get into Rayalseema expressway, Proddatur bypass till Jamalamadugu. Then left on the roundabout to Gandikota. The chill down the spine starts once we cross the Penna river bridge.
There is only 1 road from Gandikota to Belum caves. Road is ridden with potholes for more than half the journey. Average speed 40-50kmph.

Cars might have more physical controls for greater safety

European vehicle safety organization Euro NCAP is requiring automakers to reintroduce physical controls for certain functions to earn a five-star safety rating starting January 2026.

Key functions like turn signals, hazard lights, wipers, horn, and SOS features must be activated by physical controls to reduce distractions and promote safer driving.

While Euro NCAP testing is voluntary, many automakers rely on its ratings for promotion. Tesla, known for its touchscreen-centric interiors, may be most affected.

Other manufacturers, including Hyundai and Volkswagen, have also recognized the importance of physical controls for safety reasons.
