A specially-abled man who used to voluntarily manage traffic at the Rathtala Crossing on BT Road in Belghoria, Kolkata (viz. the 4 point crossing near Nazrul Mancha, Kamarhati Municipalty office) was killed in a road accident on Wednesday 2024-03-27 evening. The specially-abled man, Priyotosh Sarkar alias Sanjay from Ariadaha used to live with his mother. For the past 30 years, Sarkar has helped the traffic cops in managing traffic at Rathtala voluntarily. As he was specially abled, he couldn't be inducted as a civic volunteer. To help him to run his family, cops used to raise funds for him every month from other police personnel and give the money to Sarkar. Also unofficially, a khaki dress was given to him from the Kamarhati Municipality.
On the fateful evening, while Sanjay was managing traffic standing in the middle of B T Road, he came into the blind spot of a passenger bus coming from Feeder Road. Immediately after the accident, the bus driver tried to flee but other police personnel chased and caught the accused. Sarkar was rushed to Sagore Dutta Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Police have registered a case against the offending bus driver on charges of death due to negligence and rash driving.
Typical of the press and police, they are claiming that the bus had jumped the traffic signal and when Sanjay tried to stop the bus, he was hit and run over by the offending vehicle. To make the case stronger, police have also claimed that the bus driver was drunk.
