European vehicle safety organization Euro NCAP is requiring automakers to reintroduce physical controls for certain functions to earn a five-star safety rating starting January 2026.
Key functions like turn signals, hazard lights, wipers, horn, and SOS features must be activated by physical controls to reduce distractions and promote safer driving.
While Euro NCAP testing is voluntary, many automakers rely on its ratings for promotion. Tesla, known for its touchscreen-centric interiors, may be most affected.
Other manufacturers, including Hyundai and Volkswagen, have also recognized the importance of physical controls for safety reasons.
