Sharing an incident that happened to Rakshith Shetty on 2024-10-05.
Rakshith was driving his VW Polo to Mangalore and was doing 100+ kmph most of the time on the highway but slowed down to about 40 kmph on approaching the city limits because of heavy traffic. That was when the car started making unusual noise. He stopped for a visual inspection and a walk around to identify the source of the noise. Everything seemed normal. When he was about to move the car again it stalled with an unusually loud noise and that was when he realized that the left front wheel had come off from the hub.
Just the previous week he had got the alignment and balancing of the car done from a reputed tyre shop at his hometown. It was obvious that the wheel was not properly tightened and it was a case of total callousness on the part of the employees at the tyre shop. On inspecting other wheels it was found that the front right wheel was also not tightened properly. I shudder to think of what could have happened if the wheels would have come off when he was doing 100+.
It was a narrow escape from a much worse outcome for Rakshith.
Advice to roadies: Irrespective of whatever repair/ maintenance/ parts replacement work you get done (from wherever), try to develop a knack of whatever work is being done. Ensure that the wheels and other components have been properly fitted.
