How NOT to ride in winding hilly terrains in India

How NOT to ride in winding hill (ghat) sections.

Irrespective of whether one is driving a car or riding solo or in a group, always remain #HighOnCognition. Please don't endanger your own life or that of other road users. Be responsible. Ensure that everybody is comfortable with your mannerisms on the road. Driving/ riding are a combination of art and science.

Drunk driving and its aftermath somewhere in Gujarat in December 2019

Somewhere in Gujarat in December 2019, the guys in the white Hyundai Verna struggled hard to keep the car on the road.
However, God had other plans for them since they were actually endangering the lives of numerous others on the road.
The driver and his co-passenger were so sloshed after copious doses of alcohol that they couldn't even stand on their feet after the Gujarat Police and locals hauled them out of the overturned Hyundai Verna Fluidic.
It's a miracle that they did not hit any of the other roadies while they were still on the highway 😡

Pune to Kanpur via Madhya Pradesh - Indian Roadie Preferred Route

Pune - Indore - Guna - Dewas - Jhansi - Kanpur.
As in November - December 2019, this route was extremely bad after Dewas almost upto Jhansi!
There are no good hotels/ restaurants on the way at all.

Better route is via Bhopal - Lalitpur.

Bangalore to Pondicherry - Indian Roadie Preferred Route

Option 1: Bangalore - Krishnagiri - Vellore - Arcot - Cheyyar - Vandavasi - Tindivadam - Pondicherry. Arcot to Tindivadam is not in very good shape but there are no potholes. One may not be able to speed up beyond 80 kmph.
After Vellore, there's A2B Hotel, take right from next signal. It's the best pitstop for lunch break.

Option 2: Bangalore to Pondicherry route via Chitoor, Thiruvvanmalai (Thiruvannamali) route is scenic single road. There isn't much traffic, but about 30 kms stretch has potholes roadies need to watch out for. Till Chitoor roads are amazing.
After that for around 30 kms, road repair work is going on but roads are mostly empty.  Thereafter, its double lane without median dividers for almost 130 kms but mostly empty and good roads.
This route is senic and ideal for those staying in North Bangalore.  Prefer to drive 50 kms more rather being stuck in ORR.  Takes approx 7 hrs including 2 breaks of 45 mins and 30 mins and 6 lane toll road. It also has more options for stopping along the way.

Hotel Sairaj (restaurant), Varsai Phata Khopoli, Alibaug Highway - Indian Roadie Preferred Cafe

Roadies traveling to Alibaug (or beaches nearby) via Khopoli are strongly recommended to take a pit stop at:

Pune to Delhi and back, 3500 kms road trip in Tata Nexon by Jaykumar Bharadwaj between end April to early June 2018

Jaykumar Bharadwaj is based out of Pune. He owns a Nexon XZ+ Diesel bought in December 2017.

Event: Cousin's marriage in May 2018.

Location: Delhi.

That was reasons enough for a 3500 kms long road trip.
Total of 4 passengers including himself, the only driver.

Started from Pune on 28th April 2018. Returned to Pune on 7th June 2018.

Onward route: Pune - Nashik - Chittorgarh - Jaipur - Delhi.
Distance from Pune to Delhi via Chittorgarh was 1,600 kms approx.
Return route: Delhi - Pushkar - Chittorgarh - Nashik - Pune.
Maximum distance driven on any single day during the trip was 950 kms.

Sight seeing stops were at Chittorgarh and Jaipur.

Hotels recommended for stay with family:
Hotel Meera, Chittorgarh.

Hotel The Leisure Inn, Jaipur.
There's a nice South Indian resturant in front and also a coffee shop. Must try kullhad vaali lassi with malaai, somewhere near Raj Mandir. Have Pyaaj ki Kachori as well.

Fuel expense: Approx ₹10,500
Mostly drove at a constant speed of 80 kmph, no over speeding.

Car was super comfortable for all. There was very little fatigue. In spite of the extreme summer, AC worked very well and the rear blower was a blessing. Had magnetic screen for windows that really helped to keep away the glare and heat of 42 degrees Celsius in Delhi.
Cooled glovebox enabled stocking of chilled cans of Pepsi. Bottle holder on all the doors helped storing enough water.

Mayhem in Park Circus by Muslim CAB and NRC protestors on 2019-12-13

Absolute mayhem in Kolkata's Park Circus 7 Point Crossing on Friday, 2019-12-13 afternoon.
All of Kolkata's CBD came to a standstill.
It's expected to be worse on Saturday, 2019-12-14 and even worse during the next week with the ruling government in West Bengal tacitly supporting the mayhem.

Buses burnt by Muslim CAB/ CAA/ NRC protestors on Kona Expressway on 2019-12-14

Over 15 buses and at least 1 police van burnt down on Saturday, 2019-12-14 morning by blood thirsty rogues on Kona Expressway (NH117), near Lakeland Country Club, across the Hooghly River in Kolkata. Passengers could somehow rush out of the burning buses leaving their belongings behind.
There's total mayhem unleashed across the state by a particular community in West Bengal since Friday, 2019-12-13.
Fire tenders were prevented from reaching the spot to douse the flames. The cops were relegated to remain silent spectators because the rogues of the community enjoy the blessings of the ruling political party in Bengal.
The coming days might see more violence and mayhem by the same community who are being egged on to unleash terror with tacit support by the ruling party in power in the state.

Ambulance stopped and attacked on NH34 in Murshidabad by CAB/ NRC protestors on Friday, 2019-12-13

Cancel your proposed drive, if any, through Bengal.

From Sunday 2019-12-15, pay double toll on entering Fastag lanes without the RFID tag on windscreen

From Sunday 2019-12-15, toll plazas on national highways across Maharashtra will charge motorists double toll if they enter FASTag lanes without the tag on vehicles’ windscreens. While FASTag facility, a reloadable RFID tag linked to a pre-paid account that enables automatic deduction of toll charges as the vehicle passes the gate, will be implemented on Mumbai-Pune Expressway and old Mumbai-Pune highway on the same day, the penalty will not be enforced immediately, said MSRDC officials.
This means city motorists travelling to Ahmedabad, Indore, Bengaluru and Goa, via Bengaluru highway, should have FASTag on their vehicles by this weekend to pass through at toll booths beyond Vasai creek on Ahmedabad highway, beyond Kharegaon post on Nashik highway towards Indore and Agra, and at posts beyond Pune on Bengaluru highway respectively. On Goa highway, since expansion work is under way, it will take at least a year to start toll collection.
However, one lane will remain open on all national highways for those who still haven’t opted for FASTag and will pay toll in cash or card.
Toll booths along state highways, at Mumbai entry points—Vashi, Airoli, Mulund, LBS Marg and Dahisar —and Bandra-Worli sea link (bwsl) will become FASTagenabled from January. MSRDC officials told TOI that initially ‘cash-paying’ motorists will be allowed to use the 1-2 lanes reserved for FASTag facility on toll plazas on state highways and Mumbai entry points, but penalty will be imposed on ‘errant’ motorists at BWSL from day one. This is because, said officials, erstwhile Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) lanes are already operational here.
“We need to a few more days to create awareness among motorists about FASTag...To enable people to buy FASTag, all banks have been allowed to set up their booths near toll plazas,” said a senior MSRDC official.
Officials said motorists who already have ETC tag will be allowed to use the FASTag lanes till the two facilities are finally merged.

I love my VW Vento because it's a nice looking and comfortable car

VW Vento is a strong car indeed. I love it for its beautiful curves at the right places.
I will never boast that I feel safe because it's a strong car.
One can ill afford to play pranks with any brand of ride. I'd request all my roadie friends to be always gentle with your ride.
The brand positioning tagline for IndianRoadie, viz. #HighOnCognition is what I believe in and also what I follow.
That's exactly what keeps me safe  ..... that's my belief.

As a professional who loves to eat, sleep and drink everything that's sales/ marketing/ communication 24*7, I would love to convey to all that every existing or future car owner has his/ her own reasons to buy or not buy a particular car. It's not just price and safety features. Continuous insights studies harbouring on innumerable metrics are carried out. Ideal target audiences are identified. Markets are segmented accordingly.
Thereafter, new products are launched for almost every segment of customers depending on what the manufacturer wants. Individual brands, viz. Polo, Ameo, Baleno, Brezza, Hexa, Nexon, Figo Freestyle, Creta, etc, etc are promoted to target audiences with the right communication, which essentially is all about brand positioning.

Rohtang Tunnel: All you need to know about the world’s longest highway tunnel

Rohtang Tunnel: All you need to know about the world’s longest highway tunnel

A 3,000-member team of contractual workers and 650 regular employees of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) have been working in shifts through 24 hours on the Rohtang Tunnel project.

The Rohtang Tunnel, when complete, will cut through the mighty Pir Panjal range and become the world’s longest highway tunnel above 10,000 feet. For now, the tunnel provides a temporary winter link to the outside world not only to residents of Lahaul and Spiti but also to those living in Zanskar Valley of Ladakh. Without this link, opened on humanitarian grounds for Himachal Roadways bus service and some emergency vehicles, these villagers would have remained cut off for the next six months.

One of the most prestigious tunnel projects in the country, the work is monitored by the Prime Minister’s Office. PM Narendra Modi will inaugurate the project once complete. The tunnel is expected to be named after former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who took a keen interest in the project during his tenure, and was also a regular visitor to Manali.

A 3,000-member team of contractual workers and 650 regular employees of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) have been working in shifts through 24 hours on the project. It would have been completed at least four years earlier, but for a massive torrent of water encountered inside the tunnel. The Seri Nullah, which flows on top of the tunnel, almost threatened to derail the project and it took several years to devise ways to tackle the massive flow of water that often went up to 140 litres per second.

The project also has significant strategic implications for the military as it will allow access beyond Rohtang Pass even in peak winters. All-winter connectivity to Ladakh, however, is still some time away as more tunnels will have to be built to tackle the high passes which fall beyond Rohtang.

While Rohtang Pass is at a height of 13,050 feet, the pass on the road to Leh is Baralacha La at 16,040 feet. A 13.2-km long tunnel would be required to bypass this pass and a Detailed Project Report for the same is ready to be presented to the government.

Further down the highway comes Lachung La Pass at 16,800 feet requiring a 14.78 km long tunnel to provide all-weather connectivity. Thereafter falls the Tanglang La pass at 17,480 feet, which will need a 7.32-km long tunnel.

An alternate road link to Ladakh has also been developed by BRO on the Darcha-Padam-Nimu axis, but here again a 4.15-km long tunnel at Sinka La Pass (16,703 feet) would be required for all-weather access. The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) is making a DPR for this tunnel which will give a new road link to Leh.

Services inside Rohtang Tunnel:

*Telephone at every 150 metres

*Fire hydrant at every 60 metres

*Emergency exit at every 500 metres

*Turning cavern at every 2.2. km

*Air Quality monitoring every 1 km

*Broadcasting system

*Automatic incident detection system with CCTV every 250 metres

*Width of carriageway: 10.50 metres including one metres footpath on both sides

*Maximum speed limit: 80 km per hour
*Max Traffic expected: 3,000 petrol cars a day and 1,500 trucks a day

Tunnel sequence of events

*Cost: Rs 4083 crore sanctioned (eventual cost will be less by approx. Rs 300 crore)

*Feasibility study: May 1990

*Geological report submitted: June 1994

*Design and specification report submitted: Dec 1996

*Final technical approval: 2003

*CCS approval: 2005

*Consultant appointed: 2006

Swipe credit/ debit card and pay traffic fines in Kolkata from January 2020

From January 2020, swipe and pay traffic fine in Kolkata.

Don’t have enough cash to pay traffic fine on the spot? Here comes the solution. You will be able to pay traffic fines with a swipe of your credit or debit card from January 2020.

A year after Bidhannagar police introduced the new system of spot payment, Kolkata Police will provide sergeants with swipe machines for spot-fine collection. Police will, in fact, actively discourage cash transaction, advising sergeants to refer cases (where online transactions have been denied by motorists) to courts. “We had been mulling this change for some time now. We think we are finally ready for the experiment,” said DC (traffic) Santosh Pandey.

Currently, traffic fines can be paid online, using cards, offline at designated bank branches and in some cases, through payment service providers. The backlogs have been huge, forcing police and the state administration to offer waivers on fines.

There are two reasons for this new step, claimed Lalbazar. From the motorists’ point of view, this will help a driver — short on cash — to pay up without worry. Besides the SMS, there will be additional e-evidence that the fine had been settled. Two, from the point of view of cops, this will reduce corruption on the road. “A common public perception is that the sergeant does not hand over the fine collected to the treasury. This notion can be challenged under the new regime,” explained an officer.

“The spot fine using a POS machine is a part of the Integrated Traffic Management System. The machine generates receipt for the fine. This information is then fed to the central database. The offender receives intimation of challan, along with information on the fine paid, both on his cellphone and e-mail ID,” said an IPS officer.

The police said that they are yet to take a decision on those who refuse to pay online. “Depending on the response, we will develop a strategy,” said an officer from a south Kolkata traffic guard.

Bike ride on narrow road between sea and river near Pithrody Beach near Udupi in KA during monsoons 2019

Udupi - Pithrody Beach - Jog falls - Gokarna - Murdeshwar - Udupi monsoon ride 2019.

The feeling of riding on a narrow road with two different types of water bodies, viz. Arabian Sea on one side and river on the other is just so amazingly satisfying.
The videos were shot on a 10 km stretch from Mattu Beach to Malpe Beach near Udupi in Karnataka, a little north of Mangalore.

Soujit Ghatak in Honda Amaze injured by truck tyre burst near Nivedita Setu

Soujit Ghatak was about to enter Kolkata via the Nivedita Setu over Hooghly River on Monday, 2019-11-25 morning while driving his Honda Amaze. He was alone in the car.
While driving past a 10 wheel truck, the tyre of one of the rear outer wheels of the heavy vehicle burst.
Ghatak had his seat belt fastened and windows rolled up.
Nevertheless he sustained serious skin and bone injuries to the extent that he had to be taken to hospital. The exterior and interiors of the door, window glass and windshield were badly damaged.

There's nothing that Ghatak could have done to avoid this scary and traumatizing but freak mishap.

P.S: There's usually a solid iron ring which holds the tyres of large commercial vehicles in place on the rims. During tyres bursts, the ring normally tends to fly off like missiles in any direction.
Very unnerving, isn't it?

Kolkata to Deogarh via NH49 (old, NH6) road trip by Sandip Hunday in November 2019

Indian Roadie regular Sandip Hunday drove from Kolkata to Deogarh (near Sambalpur) (Kolkata_Deogarh), a distance of 486 kms in his Honda WRV on Friday, 2019-11-22.
He crossed Vivekananda Setu toll plaza at 8.30am and reached Deogarh (Odisha) at 7.30pm.

Route :
He drove on NH 49. Kolkata - Kolaghat - Kharagpur - Jamshola - Baharagora - Bangriposhi - Jashipur - Keonjhar - Pallahara - Barkote - Deogarh.

Road condition:
Road was excellent from Kolkata to Baharagora.

It was just ok from Baharagora to Keonjhar.

However, the NH was in very bad condition for the rest of it from Keonjhar to Deogarh. It was total offroading experience.

There was one portion  of around 50 kms between Keonjhar and Pallahara which was absolutely a terror. Only  trucks were plying with extreme difficulty.

Here, thanks to Google and with confirmation from some localities found a new route of 45 kms. It was an excellent and scenic ghat drive, via a small place called Telkoi.

He took the same route back to Kolkata on Sunday, 2019-11-24.
He left Deogarh at 9am and was there at the Vivekananda Setu toll plaza at 7.30pm.

During return journey, lunch break was at Pantha Niwas, Keonjhar. Thereafter, stopped for a short while for tea at Kolaghat.

Total distance for the round trip was 987 kms.

P.S:
* Sandip is of the opinion that in another 18 months the whole strech from Kharagpur to Deogarh will be fully 4 laned because construction work was in full swing in November 2019.

* A bypass is being constructed to skip the narrow road passing through Deogarh.

* Road widening work is presently on right up to Sambalpur (Orissa).
