Let's say that you own a car with low ground clearance (GC).
Let's imagine that the car came with stock tyres the size of each being 175/65/R15.
If your intention is to upsize the tyres so that the overall GC of the car increases, which size should you opt for 🤔
Your options are:
1) 175/65/R15, the side profile will remain unchanged, viz. 65% of 175 mm = 113.75 mm.
2) 185/65/R15, the new side profile would be 65% of 185 mm = 120.25 mm.
3) 195/60/R15, the side profile would be 60% of 195 mm = 117 mm.
There's a noticeable difference between 185 section and 175 section tyres in terms of ultimate ground clearance increase.
However, please note that these upgrades vis-a-vis stock tyres are not recommended by most car manufacturers. The revolution per minute (RPM) of the wheels will get distubed and the calibrated speedometer reading will differ from the actual speed.
It should also be borne in mind that if the overall diameter of the wheels are not changed while changing the width of the tyres only, the readings on the consoles might not show much error.
