Police brutality and excesses on 2020-03-25, Day 1 of lockdown in Gajole Police Station area of Malda district in West Bengal

Somewhere within the jurisdiction of Gajole Police Station in Malda district of North Bengal people were beaten up ruthlessly.
Misuse of power and police excesses by West Bengal Police on 2020-03-25 morning, the Day 1 of 'lockdown' to prevent spread of CoronavirusCovid19 was visible throughout the state.
West Bengal government needs to spell out in no uncertain terms how people can get their daily supplies of vegetables, milk and ration without crowding.
Use of brutal force by Police officials/ Civic Volunteers and the absence of essential supply guidelines will lead to a propensity to hoarde whatever is available.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi surely did not want such irresponsible behavior by the police force.

Curfew imposed throughout Himachal Pradesh w.e.f 2020-03-24 evening to prevent further spread of Coronavirus

Curfew has been imposed in Himachal Pradesh from Tuesday, 2020-03-24 evening after people did not adhere to the lockdown in view of the CoronaVirus (Covid19) threat.

Earlier, it was clamped in Kangra and Una districts in the afternoon.

First, it was imposed in Covid-hit Kangra; later, Una was also added to the list to stem the  spread of the virus.

Earlier, Kangra district was under lockdown since two persons had tested positive for coronavirus on March 21.

On Monday, a 69-year-old Tibetan who had returned from the US and tested positive for coronavirus died at Tanda medical college. After that the administration sealed McLeodganj and nobody was allowed in and out of the hill station.

On Tuesday afternoon curfew was imposed in the entire district. Now nobody would be allowed to move out of homes.

The shops for essential commodities would open only for limited notified time and people would be allowed to buy provisions in notified timing only.  Kangra is the only district of Himachal where three people have tested positive for coronavirus.

It also recorded the first death due to coronavirus.

The  DC said curfew was being imposed as people were not adhering to the lockdown. Now any vehicle or person roaming around without any reason would be booked and arrested. With PTI

Ceramic container manufactured by D.Waldie & Company Ltd (presently Waldies Compound Ltd) Konnagar

IndianRoadie Avijit Dhar Chowdhury, founder of Green Step Tourism stumbled upon this lovely ceramic container in Ghatshila Raj Bari. All the way from a factory on a 17 acre plot on the banks of Hooghly in Konnagar. The factory is owned by D.Waldie & Company Ltd (presently Waldies Compound Ltd) Konnagar. The embossing clearly shows this.

Waldie & Company Ltd are the highest quality lead oxide manufacturers and are the first lead oxide manufacturers in India. They are also the only supplier of a critical component used for making glass panels in nuclear reactors.

History books do not mention anything about Waldie. David Waldie, was a Scotsman who was researching on chloroform. It is widely believed that Sir James Simpson, the physician who first used chloroform as an anaesthetia, took his cue from David Waldie. Simpson did not acknowledge Waldie's contribution in this field. Disillusioned, Waldie took a ship to India and landed in Calcutta in 1853 to start things fresh.

Five years later he set up a factory on the banks of Hooghly river, at Konnagar, to manufacture oxides of lead and sulphuric acid. It was named D. Waldies & Co. Ltd.

After Waldies passed away in 1888, ownership changed to dozen business families down the years. It was the British business families initially. Then the ownership was passed in 1930, onto the rich patrons of the Calcutta Rowing Club. The name changed to Waldies Compound Ltd. somewhere down the years. Presently it is owned by four Marwari business families.

Lead is used in ceramic glazes. Probably this container was made in the factory in Konnagar, Hooghly district, West Bengal. We were told that this container is in Ghatshila Rajbari for about sixty to seventy years. How it reached Rajbari is something interesting which is yet to be found out!

If I were to drive to Puri, the must do, must see, must visit

If I decide on driving Kolkata to Puri anytime in March, April, May, June 2020, I will stay in an Indian Roadie  Preferred Hotel with Carrier AC and huge windows in every room facing the sea. I would have woken up early, bought 2 kgs of pomfret fresh from the fishermen on the beach in the morning, got those fried in the saucepan of roadside omlette sellers without missing a glance of the process and eaten up the whole after sharing 2 - 4 pieces (maximum) with others. The car would have rested peacefully in a three side covered garage.
In the evening I would have had mishti raabri delivered at the guesthouse by the Pandas attached to Jagannath Temple 😄
In between I would have spent about 3 hours frolicking in the Bay of Bengal and simultaneously had 3 - 4 rasogollas sold by the very down to earth Odiya sweet sellers who serve those in saal leaves. The hawkers would have come to the hotel later and collected the money from my room.
Dinner would be plain fish/ chicken curry and rice in another hotel 1.5 kms away with sufficient car parking space.
Out of the 3 full days, on one day I would have driven to Konark around 12 noon via the Marine Drive, and driven back via Nimapara,  Bhubaneswar, Dhauli Temple, Pipli (after meeting some dealers whom I had appointed during my Castrol days almost 30 years ago).
Lord Jagannath will keep me blessed with no fear of contracting Coronavirus.

P.S: What I will surely not have are the fried fish sold by hawkers on the beach after sundown.

Gangtok, March 16, 2020: (IPR) Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) chaired a high-level meeting of all Cabinet Ministers, MLAs, State Administration led by the Chief Secretary, and various stakeholders of the hospitality sector to deliberate on immediate measures to be taken by the State to prevent the outbreak of Novel Corona Virus (COVID 19) in the State of Sikkim.
It may be mentioned that the State of Sikkim has not reported a single case of COVID 19 till date, and the Government is taking all possible measures to prevent any outbreak.
At the outset, Chief Secretary, Government of Sikkim, Shri S.C Gupta gave an overview of the current situation, how the Government of Sikkim is managing the situation, and further steps needed to be taken to handle it effectively. He stressed that the rate at which the virus is spreading exponentially, there is no room for any complacency. He however maintained that there is no need for any panic either.
The Chief Secretary explained in detail the initiatives being taken by the Government at various levels, starting with the screening of visitors and commuters from the State borders.
He stressed on the need for community surveillance, responsible use of social media, medical training and preparedness of medical staff deputed.
He said that the quarantine wards at old STNM, New STNM, CRH, Ayush Hospital Geyzing, Namchi District Hospital, Army Hospital, seem adequate for the time being. He however proposed to convert Government establishments in the outskirts or slightly isolated places into isolation wards to cater to a larger population.
He further said that in order to check contamination within a territory, several countries and states have called for temporary shut down of institutions etc. Keeping this in consideration, he proposed for closing down of educational institutions for a certain time. Likewise, we could put a temporary ban or embargo on entry of any tourist or visitor to the State in public interest, he added.
He suggested for shut down of Gyms, Cinema Halls, other public gatherings, government meetings, melas or religious congregations.
All District Collectors are adequately equipped to issue necessary orders, he added.  He added that SDRF funds can be used for procurement of essential commodities and equipments.
Principal Secretary, Health, Shri K. Srinivasulu, briefed about the state of preparedness and measures being taken to contain the situation. He stressed that since COVID 19 has been declared as a global pandemic, there is no other option but to contain and exercise self quarantine. He also appealed to the people to exercise hygienic practices, especially in poultry farms and slaughterhouses.
DG-cum-Secretary, Health, Dr. P.T Bhutia in his address briefed about the current status of initiatives being taken by the State Health Department. He reiterated that this is a pandemic, and support and cooperation is solicited from all departments and concerned stakeholders to contain the situation. Speaking about the screening process, he said that the we need additional manpower from NGOs. He informed that Civil Defence is already in place. He informed that the Urban PHC (Old STNM) has been designated as quatantine ward, and has adequate space. However he requested the SDRF to take over the place and seal it so that any thoroughfare is avoided. He informed that the State Health Department is technically prepared. He submitted the unavailability of sample testing facility in Sikkim, thus causing delay in confirming the test reports. He stressed that social distancing is the key for the time being. He requested for some mobilization fund for the health staff and officers to carry out the work effectively.
Additional Chief Secretary, Tourism Department, Dr. K. Jayakumar, stated that the preparedness in place and future plans for containment is fully justified considering the exponential spread of the virus globally. He proposed for some moratorium in loans being taken by individuals from the hospitality sector to compensate the economic distress they would be facing.
Supplementing on the points discussed earlier, Dr. Jayakumar said that there should be strict enforcement of any measures in place such as screening, shut down and self quarantine. He also stressed on the need for extensive awareness at the community level through various modes apart from social media. He stressed on the need for Quarantine enforcement team, home and community care givers, screening team, control centre, reporting/notification of symptoms, advocacy, educating stakeholders like drivers and service sector people, hospital care, ventilator and ICUs, and temperature measuring machines.
He shared a five point strategy  of strict enforcement- Detection, Contact tracing, intensive medical care, supplies & disposals, and control room with designated team.
This was followed by an open house discussion which was participated by officers and stakeholders.
Stakeholders like TAAS, SAATO, SHRA and Driver Associations expressed their support to the decision taken by the Government. They also expressed their readiness to contribute manpower as volunteers at various screening points. They also announced that they would contribute atleast two number of thermal screening equipment to the Health Department. They urged the Government to ensure that all infrastructure should be established within the period of shut down, so that once the situation comes to normalcy, tourists and visitors should not feel apprehensive about travelling to Sikkim. They unanimously welcomed the Government's decision to intensify the process for the overall safety of the people of Sikkim, and assured their full support at various stages.
Officers of the State Government also participated in the discussion and made their submissions.
Political Secretary to the Chief Minister Shri Jacob Khaling shared some of the suggestions put forth by the people of Sikkim through various media.
He suggested for constitution of a State Task Force to monitor the situation on a daily basis.
MLA, Martam Rumtek, Shri Sonam Venchungpa, made some suggestions to ease the process of screening. He also suggested the Tourism Department and stakeholders to come up with effective communication strategies to manage the situation so that the brand value of Sikkim is intact.
Additional Chief Secretary, Finance & Planning, Shri V.B Pathak informed that an amount of Rs. 55 lakhs has been contributed by the Future Gaming Group and its MD Shri S. Martin towards the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. He handed over the cheque to the Chief Minister.
Chief Secretary, Shri S.C. Gupta summed up the open house discussion wherein he called for considering legal aspects while taking decision on shut down of educational institutions and other bodies.
After the thorough deliberations, Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang made the following announcements of the State Government to deal with the current situation impacted by COVID 19. These decisions are being made in public interest which is inevitable at this point of time, he said. He appealed to the people of Sikkim to take these decisions positively, because nothing is more important than public health and life. He said that Sikkim is fortunate to have not a single case of Corona Virus, but we should take all possible precautionary measures:
1. The State Government will notify a complete ban on entry of domestic tourists to Sikkim till 15th April, 2020. This will be notified tomorrow, he informed.

2. All public places such as Cinema Halls, Casinos, Pubs and Disco, Gyms, hotels, Mela and festivals, schools, colleges and Universities to be closed till 15th April, 2020. He added that all the students should stay in Sikkim and refrain from travelling outside the State, even if it means not travelling to their home states.
3. Melli and Rangpo will be the designated checkposts for screening. Rambam, Reshi and Uttarey check posts will be closed, which will save some manpower for the two desinated checkposts.
4. Tourism Guest House at Rangpo to be converted into a quarantine ward.
Similar arrangements to be made in Melli.
5. Government will procure testing and all required equipment. Police and Health Department were directed to go all out to carry out the work.
6. SICB Centre in Karfectar, South Sikkim will be converted into quarantine/isolation unit.
7. He declared State Level Task Force and District Level Task Force to tackle the situation. State Task Force will comprise of Principal Secretary Health, Principal Secretary Tourism and Director General of Police, while the District Task Force will be headed by the respective District Collectors. Chief Secretary will be overall incharge of the State Task Force and District Task Force.
8. Pharmaceutical companies and other industrial units will also be requested to shut down, in public interest.

10. All essential and food commodities to be stored immediately to aviod any shortage in future.
11. Complete ban on entry of labourers into the State.
12. Government orders will be issued for all the above decisions made.
In conclusion, the Chief Minister appealed to the people of Sikkim to support the decision of the Government. Roadies being fined on NH44 in Karnal, Haryana for overspeeding, dark glasses, drunk driving, etc in February 2020

Roadies are fined in Karnal, Haryana on NH44 for overspeeding, films on glasses, drunk driving, non-existence of reflector tapes in trucks, etc.

This was a video by 'India Breaking News' from the location where checking was being carried out by Haryana Police personnel on the highway in end February 2020.
It's being mentioned by the police officer on duty that the official speed limit on that stretch is 100 kmph + 5% grace, which makes it 105 kmph. A car doing 106 kmph is fined ₹2000 on the spot.
Cars with dark films on glasses are fined a whooping ₹10000.
Drunk driving cases are referred to the courts.
.
.
Caution: Not all NH in India has an upper speed limit of 100 kmph. Most states/ locations have limits ranging from 40 - 80 kmph.
There are states, viz. West Bengal which don't object to dark glasses.
HP doesn't even allow any writings in the form of stickers on windshields or the body.
.
.
Attention Ministry of Road Transport and Highways:
MORTH has only given a set of directives to all the states and UTs. However, the implementation and interpretation seems to have been left to the ministers and 'babus' of the respective State governments.
With good road infrastructure, people are not left moving around within a town, district or state. With different set of local rules and impromptu interpretations by uncouth cops in different states, the road users are invariably at the receiving end.

Requesting  Nitin Gadkari to do something about it on a war footing and dole out exemplary punishment to erring police and RTO/ PVD officials.

Musa Sherif completed navigating in 290 national and international rallying events upto SJOBA Rally in February 2020

Musa Sherif, the navigator, the man who has been in the co-driver’s seat in 290 rallies, including the just concluded SJOBA Rally in end February 2020.
A native of Kasargod in Kerala, Musa mSherif got hooked to rallying in 1993 when he competed in the Mandovi rally organised by Karavali Auto Sports Club at Mangalore.

SJOBA Rally will be the 290th in the career of navigator Musa Sherif.
As the rally drivers competing in the 33rd edition of SJOBA Rally started their cars for a round in the parking of St John’s School, co-driver and navigator Musa Sherif, 48, was busy observing the trendy vehicles with an eye on the route navigation notebook. A participant in 289 rallies and co-winner of 19 rallies in India and abroad, Sherif is one of the most experienced navigators in Asia and will be plotting the route for last year’s winner Samrat Yadav in the 290th rally of his 28-year-long career.

Dwelling on the ingredients of a good partnership at the wheels, he said, “Trust and confidence in each other are the two things which are required between the driver and the navigator for any rally. The driver completely trusts the navigator and has blind confidence in his call. Yes, the limelight is always on the driver but the navigator too stands on the podium and that’s what keeps me going.”

A native of Kasargod in Kerala, Sherif got hooked to rallying in 1993 when he competed in the Mandovi rally organised by Karavali Auto Sports Club at Mangalore. Two years on, he was signed by Team MRF and navigated for Satish Bhat till 1997 before he joined Team JK Tyre for three years. Sherif would then don the Team MRF colours from 2001 to 2012 before moving to Mahindra Adventure team a year later.

The last 28 years have seen Sherif navigate for 47 different rallyists in India and Asia. It has been a fruitful ride with Sherif pocketing six Indian National Rally Championship (INRC) titles with Gaurav Gill and one INRC title with Zuhin. Internationally, he bagged four big titles — Asia Cross Country with Lohit Urs, Malaysian Rally Group N with Arjun Rao, Malaysian Rally Championship with Sanjay Takle, and UAE Rally Championship with Saneem.

Having been the co-driver to 47 different rallyists, Sherif has also adjusted to different call signs of different drivers. “Like every different car, every driver is different and the navigator’s first task is to understand his style of driving. I competed in 35 international rallies with Sanjay Takle and his style of driving was way different from Gaurav Gill, with whom I have won six NRC titles. For some drivers, there are 10-12 call signs for corners while for Gill, there are 18 signs for corners. We have made our short-cuts too in terms of call signs and 1 right is the slowest corner and 6 right is the fastest corner. We have to tell the driver things like entering the corner late or early or left or right studying the notes with the car shaking at more than 150 kmph” Sherif laughs.

Sherif has seen several highs and lows. Last year, he and his driver Gaurav Gill were involved in an untoward incident in the Jodhpur rally when three persons, who had accidentally made their way into the rally route, died after Gill’s car crashed into them during the first leg. While Gill was initially booked under IPC 304A, Rajasthan Police dropped the charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and Gill was granted bail. “It was an unfortunate incident that took place because the organisers did not follow the rules. The rally drivers follow the route and since we were the first car to go, our aim was to build a lead and unfortunately, the incident happened on the rally route. It took us several days to get over the trauma,” shares Sherif.

This ace navigator has seen several changes in the rallying over the years. “Over the years, cars have become more powerful; there has been tremendous technical advancement and I have to remain updated at all times. Competing in Malaysia, he says, was a big challenge because of its terrain. “In UAE, I was co-driving with Saneem when our car toppled at one stage, but we won the title. I also rate 2018 title in NRC as the most satisfying win of my career,” beams Sherif, whose favourite rallying car is Subaru Impreza.

Sherif also finds the SJOBA rally challenging with its course running through both plains and the Shivalik hills in Punjab. “The terrain is completely different from other rallies in the country. Some stages are very tricky with river beds and slushy conditions.”

Sherif has one advice for aspiring navigators. “Spend time with experienced navigators and see videos of rallies. Also go through the route multiple times to understand the task of a navigator. Last but not the least, make it a habit to check the safety equipment even during practice.’’

Wrong lane driving on a foggy morning be a DAV Public School bus driver.

The school bus No. 15 with a PB-11CF registration ferrying school children of DAV Public School, Ludhiana was spotted travelling at a very high speed for quite a distance on the wrong lane of a busy National Highway on a foggy winter morning with extremely low visibility.
If this is not enough prescription for a heart wrenching fatal crash, what is?
Parents, activists, police and #MORTH should do a thorough investigation and mete out exemplary punishment to the driver of the bus.

Government of India plans expressway between Delhi and Dehradun.

Uttarakhand chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat on Monday, 2020-02-24 announced that the Centre has in principle approved the construction of a Delhi-Dehradun expressway that will reduce the travel time between the two cities from 5 to 2.5 hours.
He made the announcement after meeting the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) chairman SS Sandhu in Dehradun.
According to officials aware of the matter, the expressway is expected to be completed over the next three to five years. It will reduce the distance between Delhi and Dehradun from 258 km to 180 km. The expressway will pass through Ganeshpur, Mohand, and Ashkrodi in Uttarkhand and Saharanpur, Baghpat and Loni in Uttar Pradesh.
“The entire expressway will be elevated [higher than the ground level] and will have access control with toll plazas at different locations,” said an NHAI official on condition of anonymity. He added surveys on certain stretches of the proposed highway has started.
Rawat said the expressway will boost tourism and prove to be a milestone in Uttarakhand’s economy. “The state government will extend all possible help to the NHAI in the construction of the highway,” he said.
Rawat said the NHAI chairman has informed him that a tunnel will also be built at Mohand, which comes under the Rajaji National Park, to mitigate the impact on the wildlife.
CK Sinha, the NHAI’s regional director in Dehradun, said that the expressway’s stretch that will pass through Ganeshpur, Mohand and Asrodi in Uttarakhand will cost around Rs 1,600 to ₹2,000 crore. “The work is already on along some parts of the express highway. A stretch of the express highway passes through forests of UP for which we need many clearances related to wildlife and forests.”

It's far from being safe to drive during the night between Ratlam (MP) and Neemuch, a distance of 150 kms.
There's Mandsaur town bypass in between. For no rhyme or reason innumerable rubbles (small strips of bumps) have been constructed on the National Highway.
The moment cars and trucks slow down, goons have waylaid the vehicles.
Even ambulances with doctors are known to be parked on the highway. Goons pounce on vehicles which slow down. There have been gory incidences of kidneys and eyes forcibly robbed  from passersby.
Such incidences can happen anywhere in India during the night and maybe during the day, too.
Stay safe to avoid repenting later.

"When they say you can't, then I have to..."

Indian Roadie Dinesh Arora met with a scary car accident on 26th December 2019.

It was with his parents blessings that he survived but car got totalled.  8 of his ribs got fractured and his collar bone broke. Doctors said he won't be able to walk properly for at least a period of 6 months.

His attraction for the mountains couldn't keep him back at home for long. He started with a 15 kms walk on the 25th day following the car crash.

On 22nd February 2020, he did cycling at Bir, paragliding in Billing and short snow hike to Rajgundha village.
He drove 800 kms on his own to do all that once again.

Finally doctors declared him fit 💪.

Our Indian Roadie friend has already started planning the Goechala trek.

There's so much of positivity in Dinesh.
We are sure that he will be even more resilient henceforth.

He is a source of motivation to numerous others across India who are victims of road accidents every year.

Stay blessed, Dinesh.
