Bankim Chatterjee Street, College Square, Kolkata.
Here once used to frequent Dr Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, Suniti Kumar Chattopadhyay, Sukumar Sen, Nirmal Basu and the likes. Attraction, books and only books!
Here round the corner Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar and Madanmohon Tarkalankar had opened a book store named "Sanskrit Press Depository" in 1850s. The shop is no longer there.
The street was frequented also by the revolutionaries for holding secret meetings in their hide outs along this stretch, for their fight to free the motherland from foreign rulers. This was in the first half of 20th century.
This street is probably the only place in India where one can find Christian (Baptist Mission), Buddhist (Mahabodhi Society), Theosophist (Bengal Theosophical Society) and Muslim faith (Masjid Jahan Khan) as well as an Institution for rational thought (Calcutta University Hall) in such close proximity.
