Ferrari California T crash in Domjur, Howrah 2018-06-03

Shibaji Roy (43), director of M.L. Roy & Co. Sanitations Pvt Ltd (one of the oldest sanitation and drainage solutions company in Bengal), died in a high speed accident involving a red Ferrari California T on Sunday 2018-06-03 at Pakuria area of Domjur on NH16 in Howrah district of West Bengal. Aashna Surana (17), Roy's friend's daughter who was his co-passenger was critically injured after the Ferrari California T sports car crashed.

Roy was returning along with friends and family from their weekend breakfast drive ritual in their respective high-end sports cars. Roy was driving his friend's Ferrari California T. In Pakuria locality he allegedly took a sharp right after a truck in front suddenly slowed down, according to eye-witnesses. The Ferrari then rammed the guardrails of the flyover and crashed into an iron rail of the elevated road that pierced the engine and hit Roy in his chest. Although the air bags were deployed, Roy sustained serious injuries.

The accident spot on NH16 was barely 20 kms from Kolkata. The crash took place at about 9:30 am.

The pictures of the terrible crash indicate that the car hit the side of the road, smashing the driver's door, and the entire front was reduced to a lump of mangled metals. A metal pipe, about 6 inches thick, had pierced the bonnet. Roy was alive almost for an hour after the accident but he died waiting to be brought out of the car. Roy's friends said that he kept on crying out of pain till an hour. Roy was brought out of the car with the help of a crane as there was no proper equipment to cut through the vehicle. He was taken to Calcutta Medical Research Institute, where the doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

Aasna Surana, the injured girl was taken to the same private hospital in Kolkata and after her condition deteriorated, she was shifted to Singapore in an air-ambulance where she had to undergo numerous surgeries and treatment for many months. She was lucky to survive.

'Club GT' in which Roy was a member has seven motorists who embark on long drives every weekend. The group had left the city with their family members in seven cars; a Mercedes Benz S Class, a Lamborghini Gallardo, a Ferrari 488 Spider, a BMW i8, a Porsche Boxster, a Volkswagen Polo GTI and the Ferrari California T that Roy was driving. They had driven to Azad Hind Dhaba, Gopalpur, near Singur, 50 kms from Kolkata for breakfast on the fateful morning and was on their way back home when the mishap occurred.

"Roy owned a Jaguar F Type but on Sunday he was driving my Ferrari as he was planning to buy it. He was test-driving it for a few days," said Suresh Tolani, owner of the ill-fated Ferrari.

Roy's 17 year old son Shreyan, however, had a lucky escape as he got off the Ferrari while returning from the drive so that his friend Aashna could get a ride.

The car, a Ferrari California T, is a two-door, hard top convertible sports car, that makes over 500 horse power. To put those numbers into perspective, a Maruti Swift makes 86 bhp.
